Due Process: Threats to Constitutional Rights

What is happening to our civil liberties? What is the future of Due Process, and what the future hold for our Constitutional rights?

On March 5, 2012, U.S. Attorney General Eric Holder gave a speech at the Northwestern University Law School about the legality of using lethal force against potential “terrorists.” Holder defended the use of drones and air strikes to kill and assassinate anyone who poses an “imminent threat” to US interests. Furthermore, he stated that even American citizens abroad can be targeted in such a fashion without any due process or legal oversight, as was the case with Anwar-al-Awlaki.

Does anyone trust that their government has their "best interests" in mind? Infringements on civil liberties have been a regular part of American history.

Such efforts to legalize extrajudicial programs follow a historical pattern of restricting rights. Eager to preserve national security, many past administrations had taken solid—but profoundly unjust and unconstitutional—moves that deliberately restricted constitutional rights and liberties

How much will we sacrifice in the name of hunting terrorism? President Obama has continued Bush-era policies regarding suspension of civil rights and liberties, and even expanded them in some cases. The Patriot Act pretty much gives the federal government the right to do whatever they want, whevever they want to whomever they want.

-the Sedition Act of 1798, signed by President Adams
-President Lincoln, suspends the writ of habeas corpus
-President Wilson persecuted thousands for speaking out against his wartime policies
-President Roosevelt interns hundreds of thousands of American citizens
-Presidents Johnson & Nixon tried to prevent the publishing of the Pentagon Papers

What the does the future hold for American civil liberties? I have always thought of civil rights similar to gas prices, yeah they might come down a little, but on the whole they'll continue to rise and rise, and we just accept it. Well it's the same with civil liberties, they'll take more and more, but a little at a time, and we'll never get back what they take from us, just accept it.

One example of our degrading rights, the 4th amendment.

The 4th has been rullled by the SCOTUS to be based on a persons reasonable level of expectation for privacy.

Now enter the TSA, why are children being screened? Why do little kids get the TSA grope?

Because when they become adults their level of Expectation of Privacy will be almost none, why would they expect it when Mommy and Daddy let government thugs grope them every time they had to travel.

20-30 years expectation of privacy in public will no longer exist.

"papers please" its the new America.

Great rebuttal, benrl.

20-30 years expectation of privacy in public will no longer exist.

This is exactly how I expect/predict things to go. We are slowly becoming de-sensitized to violations of our civil rights; pretty soon we are watching them go along the waist-side.

What is truly wrong is the complacency of the people. If more people cared there would be riots, but instead they are brainwashed by the idiot box and don't make waves. This leaves a simple cleanup for the government cor any individuals who want to stand up to it. Label them crazy. If they repeat it long enough then people believe it. This is a very real problem with our society. It allows the government to steal our rights and the banks to steal our money and wealth. Then when it is too late we won't be able to take anything back.

The desensitization of the American population is one of the worst crimes against us as it does slowly grind away the rights and liberties given to us by our creator at the time of our birth. There is a war for complete control of the populace by those 'behind the curtain'.

Our duty is to speak out, spread the truth, be respectful to all those who are unaware of what is really happening to us. To teach our children and instill in them the belief of freedom and sovereignty. Insist that our educational system not alter history to fit their agenda or remove our children from the public education system. Stop paying for the idiot box, read, educate ourselves and those we love to the truth.

Only slowly, and steadfastly can we take our country back. We must do it or we will inevitably end up owned by those pulling the strings.

Absolutely, the amount of complacency in this country is mind-numbing. Look at the responses to this thread. No one cares. People are more concerned with 12/21/2012 and the Mayan calender than what's actually happening right in front of them. We're talking about LIMITATIONS and RESTRICTIONS on our civil rights and liberties! Each time the government takes something away from us it makes it easier for them to take more and more. That's what people fail to see. That's going to be our un-doing.

Well said, but may I pose the question ... even though it may be a question for another topic/post.

Is this information 'right in front of them'? I mean the masses, IMO are truly unaware due to the way everything is set up.

Your words describe intelligence and most likely do not require my elaboration, but an example would be:

Situation occurs. Media covers it with bias and no real depth. Population makes non-rational decisions based upon feelings which were falsely created by the information or lack there of presented by the media. Media then switches to another topic.
