epochtimes [Chinese Version]

Three suns were observed over multiple cities in China’s eastern coastal region on Dec. 10, as well as a “reverse rainbow,” setting off a flurry of comments on the Chinese Internet.

What they saw ?

- The sun and a pair of symmetric bright spots
- A rainbow in the shape of a smile

These unusual phenomena quickly went viral on the Internet, coinciding with recent fears regarding the Mayan calendar, which some have interpreted as meaning the world will come to an end on Dec. 21 this year. Many also scoffed at the idea that the spots were celestial omens portending some sort of catastrophe.

But , scientists have different explanation .They refer to these abnormal phenomena as mock suns or sundogs (parhelia), an optical phenomenon produced by ice crystals, creating colored or white arcs and spots in the sky.

According to these scientists, the smaller suns are actually shadows of the real sun

What is your thought ? Are these signs of impending doom or just rare atmospheric phenomena?

The one big thing that I've noticed about being a curious person is that...

Weather happens.

Thankfully we all now have a device that can capture it in our pockets

Sentence structure...not the weather in our pockets.

I see snow on the ground = cold.
When it's cold the sun and the moon can both make halos under certain conditions..

I've never seen it so pronounced though..

Beautiful.

As a comparison, Moon, from google images:

Ice crystals can make for a rainbow, sometimes.
Although I am not sure if that is possible for an upside-down rainbow, too.

Obviously, the athmosphere was filled with tiny, reflecting ice crystals. If the light comes from above, maybe the moon, there might the a solution which allows light to be bend in this specific way.

Myth not busted, but unconfirmed as yet.

I always thought Rainbows were circular but you only saw the upper part of it for whatever reason that escapes me right now (it's before 8am, forgive me!)

Yup. Ice crystals.
Any of us living in northern, snowy, cold conditions, see those types of suns/rainbows/halos/light pillars a lot.
Both with the sun and the moon. Moon rainbows (halos) are very cool.

Beautiful phenomenon.
