Gas fracking: Ministers approve shale gas extraction

www.bbc.co.uk...

Today's fracking decision has created political excitement as the Prime Minister the Chancellor and some business leaders have spoken enthusiastically about shale gas.

Environmentalists are more cautious following incidents in the US in which fracking has been associated with pollution of water through the chemicals involved in the process, as well as leakage of methane - a powerful greenhouse gas as well as a local air pollutant.

They say fracking will generate much more opposition in the UK than it has in the US as it involves turning green fields into industrial sites.

Do any UK ATSers live near any of these possible fraking sites ?

If yes, has there been any activity in your area recently in terms of infrastructure and business investment ?

Yes, I do.
I think this thread will gain momentum when the frack shakes start happening.

In the meantime here is the link to BGS

Damn.

Yep.

Even better, both yellow and grey areas overlap, Does that mean double trouble :puz

Oh well, do not expect many problems before the world ends on the 21st, so not too bothered.

Listening to BBC radio news yesterday (13/12) I gather that in the US Fracking will mean a reduction in gas costs, where-as in the UK it is likely to cause a rise. Something to do with green house gas emission exchanges maybe, I was driving so only half heard? No wonder the power companies want this to happen as well as investors.

Wonder how many MP's have interests in power companies?

I the government were really concerned with rising energy prices and acknowledged the truth that UK consumers have been royally shafted through privatisation of utilities - whether it's water, gas or electric - they'd create a new nationalised industry at a time when there's no real competitive market that can cry foul over the introduction of a national concern into an already existing market.

There's serious money to be made here at our expensive. That's all that matters.

Also, whilst the government are keen to point to America as an example, one thing that is very different is population distribution. We have a much denser population than America (England alone has 1/6 of America's total population crammed into a space 1/75 of America's land mass) and that means it will directly impact how people live here. People's private properties will be directly affected as people tend to own surface rights, but not the mineral rights below their land. The government will give fracking firms carte blanche access in the same way they're happy to ride rough shed over people's lives with paltry compulsory purchase orders and the like.

I genuinely think this will be disastrous.

Don't these idiots know that much of the rock/crust can be on a 'cushion' of shale? and extracting the gas will cause quakes and large areas of ground sinking. Probably the answer to some of the massive sink holes we've seen as of late.

For the gas, we get:

1. Ground movement, and land destruction
2. millions of gallons of water polluted

yey... sounds like such a deal.
