His wife was escorted out by SWAT, safely, and the OP left to go be with her, since the police would not allow her to leave the scene.

The only time and place I don't carry is when I'm drinking in a bar. Most bars in Iowa don't allow firearms, and it is a crime to be carrying if you are under the influence (.08, the same BAC limit for operating a vehicle). Now, if I'm in an establishment, and have not had a drink, bet your ass I'm packing. Oh...I also don't carry it into places where it will be obviously identified by way of metal detectors, wands, etc. So airports, courthouses, some night clubs or schools...but you get the picture. If I went to church, it'd be along for the ride. And nobody would know the difference, that is until there was a worst case scenario type situation in which I could no longer pass as not having a firearm due to my responsibility as a human being to protect other human beings from senseless acts of violence such as this.

The profile is males in their teens to mid-to-late twenties. So high school and University age males are often the culprits.

The decades old solution to a psycho with a gun?

More people with guns, those shooters got what they deserved sorry honest opinion.

People finally get that laws do not prevent crimes?

I know what people are going to say. "It's too easy for firearms to fall into the wrong hands".....the simple retort, is it SHOULD be even easier for them to be in the right hands. Unbelievable how the ban guns bandwagon/ media/government/law enforcement will be quick to point out the shooter "shouldn't have had a gun", while refusing to acknowledge that if they don't own a firearm, that is a them problem.

We need to ban AR-15's, body armor and V for Vendeta masks since they are all clearly used by terrorist like these.

We need to now create a 1000 yard gun free zone around the mall so killers like these will no longer come near our malls and open fire with a semi-automatic military rifle who's purpose is only to kill every motherf***er in the room.

More god damned ammunition for the liberals to go after our guns...

I'm glad your wife is ok OP! may the piece of scum perp rot in hell...

I'm extremely liberal.
I'm so liberal I think everyone should be allowed to have even LEO/military exclusive firearms.
There should even be "dispute resolution" zones where people can go to permanently resolve their differences, or commit suicide by playing FFA Last Man Standing games.
Such places could even have entertainment feeds plugged in for voyeurs that like that kind of sicking violence.
Give all the violent stupid people some place to 'play', and they can sort themselves out.
It's brutal, but, prisons, for the most part, don't work.

You obviously didn't see the sarcasm in my post, WE DO NOT NEED MORE BANS! we need more people legally carrying in these "Gun Free Zones" that only inhibbit the law abiding citizenry! WE are the first line of defense, the cops and swat are just the clean up crew.

Just watching this live on CNN... is this a joke??

The sherriff looks as if he is about to start laughing, the whole time... and in the background there are two morons on a cell phone smiling, etc... like it's college gameday and they're trying to get their mug on TV! that is just terrible....

anyone else notice the Sherriff looking like he is about to break out giggling? Looks like he's trying to hide his smile.

I hate it for anyone injured or killed and their families. I wish we could change this type of stuff... Does it happen more around the holidays or does it just seem like that because emotions are higher during the holidays?

One of the reasons we are not the target of hostile invasion is due to our citizens being armed.

In situations like this, opinions can run hot and passionate, with a lot of calls for gun bans, I think that is opposite of what we need!

These criminal murderers are gonna commit the crimes, regardless whether law-abiding citizens are packing, or not.

Banning guns for the lawful citizens would not reduce the crimes, it would only embolden the criminals. They will rob you now, even when they know you might be carrying.

How much easier does the choice to commit a crime become when the criminal knows they will not be confronted by a potential victim with a gun?

I think some of us have it wrong... we do not need less guns for our up-standing citizens, we need more, many more. Had a few more people been armed, would this attack, and others like it, even happen? Maybe, but they would probably be much less deadly on average...

IMO gun control is not the answer. I also agree with "gun free zones" in principle. The concept of "sanctuary" is a sound one - safe ground where combatants cannot engage.

Sadly, in our society, criminals and maniacs do not follow the rules.

My proposition would be a new level of concealed carry permit. A much higher standard of background check involved. And those people, with that permit, would be allowed to carry anywhere. Planes, malls, churches, bars, etc. That way, even in the sanctuary, people would be safer than now.

More than that really what the pro gun crowd says that people not government has the choice.

A person can own a gun if the want

A person can outsource their own personal security to the police if they are not too busy at a donut shop or driving 120 mph to catch a person who ran a stop sign.

A persons choice is all we ask well that is my opinion.

Inappropriate external emotional reaction is a common sign of extreme emotional duress. Stage fright, shock, etc. If he is smiling, or fighting a smile, it might only mean that he's extremely shook up. Chances are that he's already being handled by the Feds, in addition to the shooting on his watch, and the nerves about appearing on a TV broadcast that will likely be viewed worldwide and scrutinized for months or years to come?

Understandable that he's emotionally shot-out.

Bless you. I should have been more clear, but I was talking specifically about "No Guns" signs at retail establishments. As you know, California is crazy land when it comes to ownership and carry, so we do have a whole additional set of laws that must be followed to legally carry. In fact, it says right on my permit in the restrictions section - Not valid if consuming alcohol or remaining at any establishment that primarily serves alcohol. I also don't carry if I go to a bar, but restaurants that have bars are fair game as long as you're not seated in the bar area. In other words, the dining room is cool as long as you're not drinking. We also can't carry in "secure areas" such as courthouses, airports or federal, state and city office buildings. CCW law in California actually provides an exclusion for schools - if your licensed, you can carry on the school property. Go figure.

Not trying to derail this thread, but chances are good that if this had happened in California there could have been one of our 35,000 licensed CCW holders in that mall, ignoring the "No Guns" sign.

Oh, and I've had my eye on one of those LCPs. That or the Kahr equivalent CW9. It's sometimes hard to conceal a full frame weapon while at the pool. Heh.

they found the gun and they are running serial number of weapon/s and it seems they just called in the bomb squad so possible explosives and they are texting messages instead of over the radio so it might be a way to discretly tell otehr officers where bombs might be,also they just said they have the shooter with them which to me either means hes dead and being transported or is alive and in custody, they just mentioned somethign about nevada so ill see if any thing else comes out about that suspects dob may be 1946 wont post his name as i think thats against t and c
and i didnt catch it all
