They have the Rebels bunkered down in the cities and I'd hate to be those rebels if the FSA was squashed in the coming months... They are toast.

A total of 29 opposition groups, including fighting "brigades" and civilian committees, have signed a petition calling for mass demonstrations in support of Jabhat al-Nusra, an Islamist group which the White House believes is an offshoot of al-Qaeda in Iraq.

Although Jabhat al-Nusra remains separate from the Free Syrian Army, many FSA leaders now recognise its strength and order their forces to cooperate with it.

The decision to blacklist the group, which according to the Washington Post will be announced today, raises the prospect of a drawn-out, anti-American insurgency if and when the rebels succeed in forcing out President Bashar al-Assad.

The rise of Jabhat al-Nusra represents the Americans' worst fear – they refused to arm the rebels earlier in the conflict to avoid weapons falling into the hands of jihadists, only to find that in their absence, jihadi groups well-funded by supporters in the Gulf have risen to prominence.

Opposition fighters inside Syria told The Daily Telegraph that the US announcement was too little too late, and that any attempts by the West to intervene in Syria would be rejected. "We don't support the new FSA military command," said Ous al-Arabi, a spokesman of the Deir al-Zour Revolutionary council.

"For Deir al-Zour province they have chosen people who are not representative. Jabhat al-Nusra is the strongest group here and they ignored that.

Secular rebel commanders have gone even further than that. One told me the next war will be against the Islamists. Another was cocky: If we can get rid of Assad, don't you think we can get rid of the Islamists?

But will it be so easy? By many accounts, the militant Islamist groups now number in the thousands and are growing every day.

It looks like the Muslim extremist view that all lands that were once conquered for Islam must remain Islamic is coming back and spreading too.

The interview ended with Ahmed volunteering that eventually Muslims must reclaim Andalucia in Spain for the Islamic Caliphate.

His logic, that it was justified because Spain used to be under Islam, was somewhat undermined when he went on to say that Islam should move on to bring the UK under its control and indeed, eventually, the whole world.

Your very quick to point out that the Islamists are sending young men in to do there dirty work but how is it any different from old politicians sending young US men into the wars in the Middle East? The same thing is happening on both sides... Why can't some people see that? The only difference is, US soldiers don't get 72 virgins, they get a medal and a mourning family..

Was it by Allah?

If so, he is an apostate, for the prophet already taught true muslims he is the last messenger. Anyone who claims to be messenger or even speaks on behalf of Allah is a liar.

Was it by an Iman?

If so, may muslims be aware that there is NO verse in the Koran that condone any attack upon other nations or harming of innocents, lest of all children of the Book. And neither does the Koran authorise any muslim to take actions upon their own hands without the authorisation of the recognised and accepted muslim assembly of the Islamic community.

A fatwa should be issued for the capture of the interviewee, to bring him in for investigation and if found guilty of blasphemy and apostacy, should be sentenced and charged to prevent others from insulting Islam again.

If you read the whole article, it's obvious the level of brainwashing that Al Qaeda is playing on all of these people.

Al Qaeda factions have totally convinced these people that they are the only ones who can protect them now from Assad and it's only through the power of Allah and them all banning together for Islam that they're even able to do so. The Syrians are so desperate right now, they'll believe anything they are told and act on anything they are instructed to act on if it saves their lives.

Jefferson and the United States in general had no issue with the Muslim faith as a whole, but only with the Barbary Pirates. Linking the pirates to the whole of Islam is just setting up a straw man argument.

Jefferson is known for advocating religious equality among the populace of the United States (in opposition to various Baptist ministers at the time). He specifically advocated for the rights of the Hindu and Mahemotan (Muslim) followers in the States.

In his autobiography, Jefferson recounted with satisfaction that in the struggle to pass his landmark Bill for Establishing Religious Freedom (1786), the Virginia legislature "rejected by a great majority" an effort to limit the bill's scope "in proof that they meant to comprehend, within the mantle of its protection, the Jew and the Gentile, the Christian and Mahometan." There is that of personal beliefs and public policy, of which you cite the latter and are absolutely correct.

It is my understanding from the notes in his personal Quran to various writings in his journals at Monticello, that Jefferson feared the religion at its basic tenets as dangerous to American freedom from oppression.

I'd be happy to be wrong, and I'm not peddling in BS or setting up straw men, simply stating what I have been told over the years by folks a whole lot smarter than I.

That's a fair response.

I would be genuinely interested if you end up finding documentation that supports your claim. It would really present more insight into Jefferson's beliefs and motivations.

The policy of the "The enemy of my enemy is my friend" has been proven wrong and gotten us in trouble time and time again. It likely will again before its all over..

Hahaha. No. The only reason Israel hasn't already exterminated the Syrian military is that anti-Israel sentiment is so high that open Israeli support for the rebels would damage their cause. If the rebels asked for it, Israel would be happy to unleash its air force. It would make a nice training exercise.

As many have said, the Islamists in Syria are a minority. The US government has designated some of the Syrian rebel groups as terrorists, while simultaneously recognizing the main rebel groups as the legitimate government of Syria.

If the rebels oust Assad and take over the govt, the new govt will be Islamic in nature, probably controlled by the Muslim Brotherhood. Just look what's happening in Tunisia, Libya, and Egypt.

To establish world wide Sharia law. In effect, they will force their "religion" on you, wether you believe it or not.
