Nasa camera captures 'fire-ball' over Texas

This link has a really cool video of a meteor that fell over Texas 12/7/12.
There is not really much more to add other than what is stated in the article, but it is very cool that it was captured on video, so I thought I would share:

Well I'm not surprised BBC is lying in their article. They are probably too used to lying, they do it naturally these days. I think we all know how MSM is these days.

Yes, I think BBC got their facts mixed up:

NASA did confirm they tracked the meteor, but it was someone else who captured the footage from their dash cam.

Wow cool footage what's more funny is that second driver in front starts breaking as soon as he sees lights, I can only imagine what went through his head 'OMG I'm goin' in head-on collision with freakin' meteor'.

The text in the article could be describing the other less interesting video from this event (which is a NASA video), but the person who put the video in the article used a different video.

Or the person who wrote the article thought the dash-cam footage WAS the NASA video.

The BBC isn't lying........ it's just another 'ill-informed' journalist who is probably more interested in the X-factor than a meteor story but has to report on it anyway......;-)

I saw a meteor in Ireland (Carlow) on Wednesday around 9.15, not quite as bright but travelling due South and it lasted around 2-3 secs........ there was a guy in his van infront who also saw it too....... as we both stopped to make sure .....

no dash can i'm afraid though.....

Not all meteorites make craters.

Many meteorites that display huge fireballs when entering the atmosphere can be quite small when they hit the ground. Plus, the atmosphere usually slows down those smaller meteorites to "terminal velocity" of about 200 or 300 miles per hour. That's not fast enough to create a large crater -- or sometimes even any crater at all.

Take the Peekskill Meteorite of 1992, for example (a meteorite that I was lucky enough to witness from Pennsylvania while driving in my car). Here are a couple of the many videos of that meteor. It occurred on a Friday evening, so there were a lot of video cameras filming at High School football games, and many of them captured the meteor. As you can see, it exhibits a huge fireball:




The only known piece of the meteoric to make it to the ground hit a parked car in Peekskill, New York (hence the mane of the meteorite). It did some damage to the car, but did not create a crater:

Even if this hit the ground first, it may have made made a dent in the ground, but not what most people would call a "crater". It takes a larger meteor to have enough mass and energy to not be slowed down (and break up) by the atmosphere and hit the Earth with enough impacting force to make a crater -- although that DOES happen sometime (but not often).

You could look at it this way - the news title doesn't lie, the NASA camera did capture the fireball. BBC just put the video from a different camera.

HOLY CRAP. i saw a blue orb a month ago that was just like that. The orb was blue and shot across the sky and was gone. It was really low flying like that. My co-worker and I looked at each other like "Did you just see that!" the object was just like that.

Looks like a police dash-cam, personal opinion, but still a great video!!
