What point was that?

The only thing you seem to find important is for one not the very core of the issue raised here. You seem to rather talk about religion and ethnicity which was a factor in the argument but not the argument then the teen sex problem and improvements presented.

You really reached deep to get to this didn't you? Where did I direct this argument to be about religion? Please, cite it. Where did I mention ethnicity? Again, cite it. You can't because you are speaking squarely from your back-side and in over your head.

Instead, I mentioned that the OPs self-view has taken away from the topic that should be discussed: teen pregnancy and sex; but he chose to say it was because of a certain group using an apples-to-oranges study. I don't discount that study, it has good information. I do however discredit it because of the manner in which the OP presented it.

His narrative speaks volumes.

You are right you were not one of many who were obviously offended because their country was shown of in a worse manner then another resulting in mud flinging and posting totally off-topic links in a effort to derail the thread by trying to show bad things about "the other country" ,which was just sad to see. You got caught in the cross fire, you did not do any of that in the thread and i should not have directed that at you and there fore i apologies to you for that.

And yes i also agree that the post should have been presented a bit different then it was but that should not give people a excuse to act like little children and try and pretend it is all to promote child porn (that was really sad) and derail the thread. If they do not like it and want it to go away then all they need to do is stay away from it.

Apology accepted. So lets discuss the issue then and the assertion presented by the OP. First though, a baseline to understand where you stand: Do you think "hard-core" christian right conservatives are wrong for teaching their children abstinence? Is it because of that teaching that has led to a rise in teen pregnancy? What would say about TV shows that glorify teen pregnancy such as Teen Mom ( and the fact that many teens sought to become pregnant for a chance on the show?)

From Huffington Post:

...young ladies are so eager to be on reality TV that they are actually getting pregnant just to score an audition.

There are many factors besides religious teachings that have led us to this point.

Should go good with my cadre of.....adult beverages. Billy never lets me down, he really does get me going.

It will be interesting because Rubicon made some valid concerns known as the thread drifted, but wasn't willing to call out the OPs assertions as the crux of the side-track. Make a claim that it is because of certain group and guess what? People will defend it.

On the flip-side, it nearly is the only way to garner attention in certain circles of ATS. Controversy breeds debate here.

I agree , there are many factors that contribute to teen pregnancies outside of religion. It is why i myself called it just 1 factor in the whole manner and not unrightfully so. I do think that running abstinence programs is wrong and a whole different ball game then parents teach/advising their children in that manner at home (schools have no say in that matter in my opinion) and i do believe that it contributes to teen pregnancies and abortions more then that it manages to prevent.

What i think about shows on tv such as teen pregnancy and teen mom is that it would be better to have them removed from tv. Lessons about the subject are better given at home and at school in a proper manner.

So should it be solely a parental issue? With that, the surefire question follows: What if parents neglect to teach their children? Of they teach them something to the contrary? This is the basis of why many in the United States don't want the government to even be involved in teaching the morality of sex. The opinions vary so much and are wide. I digress though.

What makes this other country less susceptible to teen pregnancies? Is it because they teach about sex? Give out free contraception? Make it less taboo and parents are more open about it?

Fantastic to see such a voice of reason here... Shame you didn't find this thread earlier.

'Prohibition' never works. And prohibition in the face of ridiculous shows like 'Teen Mom' is even worse because with it comes a lack of education on the topic in question which in turn leads to the complete opposite effect.

Added to this is the air of 'mystique' which always accompanies things that are 'banned' yet will obviously not kill you straight away. In terms of teenagers those who then begin to engage in a particular banned activity will often be rewarded with an elevated social status making them 'cool'.

I think overall society has artificially extended childhood well past a time when teens should behave as adults - partially through the requirements of completing an education, partially cos it’s so hard for a young person to find a job and finally through a lack of respect for today's youth.

We strip away their responsibilities and then expect them to act responsible...? Unfortunately it just doesn't work. In effect we have created a generation of children stuck in adult’s bodies with adult urges.

Have you taken a look at the state of moral decline in the country? What's on TV? Abortion? Gay marriage? Marijuana legalization? Etc? I'm gonna go out on a limb and say religious zealots are not running this country.

Um, that's not really all over the TV but lets just say it was...

Abortion is a personal choice and is completely legal in this country. I don't like the idea of it but I'm not going to judge someone for getting one if they really cannot provide for the child.

I have no problem with gay people and think that gay people should be able to get married. I fail to see how this is moral decline.

Marijuana is a plant which has many benefits and should be able to be used by humans without big government getting in the way and locking people up. I fail to see how this is moral decline. You should believe God created the plant for a reason.

Yes i think when it comes to teaching abstinence it should solely be up to the parents.Schools could of course talk about it but not teach it as in force it upon teens,'basically' forbidding it much like the programs do. It is not the schools place to make that choice.

If parents 'neglect' teaching abstinence then they do not believe in it as much as one other might. It is not their way of living or how they themselves have been brought up so i see no reason why they should raise their own any different when it comes to this. Not having sex before marriage is a subject that is hard to duck for any teen in the civilized world it will be hard for them not to encounter the subject even if it is not a much talked about one at home. The parents of course should also not discourage a child when it chooses to follow the rule (and why would they right !?)of abstinence if it decides to do so at some point.

All of the above in my opinion. Sex ed (a proper one) free contraception and making it less taboo is key here. The opposite only leads to frustrations and misunderstandings or simply said , uneducated people which leads to the problems at hand.
