This time, I'm not in Japan.
Despite all the quakes, I really do miss the place, it was one of the best. It's sad to hear this again.

All of my FB friends are going crazy right now, saying how it was huge and lasted about 2 minutes.

Tsunami? More radiation problems?

Hopefully not...

Edit: apparently a 7.3 - 7.4
Edit: Another hit, 6.2

Yep, looks like a 7.3 on initial reports.

Quake Map

Hope the epicenter is far enough away from civilization that there is little to no damage...the latter mostly.

Alright, if this is true then I officially have no use for the mainstream media anymore.
Why is it that every time something earth shattering (no pun intended) happens, I find out about it on ATS first?

Once I found out about it (which is while it was happening over there),
the first thing on my mind was to post here.

old habits I guess, all the way from the first quake.

I wonder if it will cause a large enough tsunami to effect the west coast or Hawaii as well? I hope everyone fairs better this time and heeds the warning in Japan. Edit... see that it will only be 1 meter in height, not as bad.

That earthquake map says it occured at a depth of 36.1 KM, does that sound right? that`s like 22 miles?

Wow, ATS just received a kick in it's rear end. The traffic on the previous posts has been minimal...

This pops up, 15 minutes later it's more popular than just about anything posted in the past like 6 hours.

I wonder if I'm the first to say it...

"Is this some how related to Dec 21, 2012?

Maybe because you are hear reading and not watching TV?

Who knows, who cares.

Did the storage container for the fuel rods collapse into the sea?

Initial thoughts:

-prayers to those in Japan who may face hardships.

-hopefully this isn't the beginning of a larger geological event...more earthquakes or a disturbance to Mt. Fuji.

-hoping a tsunami doesn't form.

-hoping there is no damage to nuclear plants.

-It's the beginning of the apocalypse! AHHHH

-This may be a human caused earthquake, an explosion along the fault..by the US, or China, or whatever.

The last two are jokes more than anything. This event shouldn't be seen as 2012 doom verification. We shouldn't jump to conclusions like it is a man engineered event.

In the first moments, I think the primary concentration should be on hoping this is a singular event and that the people in the region are safe. And of course learning details as they come...

Wow it's right off the coast of Fukushima too.

This is so sad for the very proud people of Japan. Hope its not a start to the ring of fire kicking into action. Being from Christchurch, I know how the Japenese feel. Wondering when things will get back to Normal.

According to some it hit near where it hit on 3/11.

And this quake shook almost all of Japan;

some mobile networks are down in Japan.

This hasn't happened since 3/11, where I remember I couldn't call anyone on my cell when it happened.

edit: maybe only near tokyo, from what I heard, possibly all.
