Thousands of US troops arrive near Syrian shore on USS Eisenhower

The arrival of the USS Dwight D. Eisenhower, one of the 11 US Navy aircraft carriers that has the capacity to hold thousands of men, is now stationed at the coast of Syria, DEBKAfile reports. The aircraft carrier joined the USS Iwo Jima Amphibious Ready Group, which holds about 2,500 Marines.

they quote Debka

but if true;

“The United States now stands ready for direct military intervention in the Syrian conflict when the weather permits,” the news source wrote.

There is no way that civilians will be evacuated to an aircraft carrier. It is not done.

USS Independance did it in 1983 at Grenada and again in Lebanon. Both times civilians were helicoptered out to the ship, given medical aid and then helicoptered off to a friendly airport for transport back to the US. Civilians were also sent aboard the USS John F. Kennedy from Lebanon. Don't know how many at Grenada or on the Kennedy, but, I know of at least 300 to the Indy.

All the US need to do, is drop one bomb on the Presidential Palace, if Assad is in there ofcourse, and take out the chemical weapons plants. Job done. No US troops will die, then the brutal civil war will finish.

This would be nearly impossible because the US Constitution explicitly requires a formal declaration of war and grants that power solely to the Congress. The executive/president has no Constitutional power to do any such thing. The People would never stand for it

This our Convention understood War to be the most oppressive of all Kingly oppressions; and they resolved to so frame the Constitution that no one man should hold the power of bringing this oppression upon us or to place our President where kings have always stood.

...oh wait

archives.cnn.com... old article on the issue of a president declaring war with out Congressional approval

seems harry truman started the trend with korea and its kind of gone downhill more so after during nixons time that the war powers act got passed giving the president a 60 day window of war with out congress approval.
and this seems to be the main reason they can get away with it with out congress

In the almost 30 years since Congress adopted the War Powers Resolution, presidents have regularly employed our Armed Forces in hostilities without consulting with Congress. How do they do it? They issue a report "consistent with" the resolution rather than "pursuant to" it, and claim that whatever actions they have so far taken have not triggered the 60 day grace period. They maintain, in short, that a war is not a war in order to bypass the statute.

Couple of other things that occur to me...

The US usually likes at least 2 carriers for operations - ideally 3. The only other carrier in the region is the Stennis in the Gulf. They would have to fly all the way across Iraq to get to Syria - not sure if that's practical or not? It would seem much better to park another one off the coast along with the Eisenhower....but maybe that would be too obvious.

Also, 2500 Marines wouldn't be enough to do much. I've heard it would need 75,000 to secure all the chemical weapons sites, for example.

Basically, I don't feel like the US has enough firepower in place for anything significant.

I stand corrected. The Eisenhower is interrupting its scheduled deployment in the Gulf. headed to Norfolk for repairs to its flight deck. Info from stratfor.com. That leaves one carrier in the Gulf. Confirmed by Stratfor.com today.

On Stratfor's map it shows the Eisenhower in the Med as of today. I'm not seeing where it's saying about it going back to Norfolk
Just says "Under way in the 6th Fleets AOR"

The Ike is heading to Norfolk for resurfacing of it's flight deck. It will head back to the Gulf in Feb. So we'll get to respond to all the RT and Debka reports of it being near Syria once again.

It's THAAD not THAD, and there are only three launchers in existence right now. They're stationed at Ft Bliss in Texas. I can't find a single source that shows them being anywhere but there. The system has only flown nine test flights, and are currently nine for nine in intercepts. There is a radar for the system in both Turkey, and the UAE, with the UAE to receive two launchers in the coming years. The radar in Turkey was just activated this summer.

Eisenhower is on the way home for deck resurfacing, because Nimitz, which was supposed to replace her in January, won't be ready to sail in time. So the Stennis will be the only carrier in the region. The Truman will eventually be on scene early in the year, to bring us back up to two, then Eisenhower will probably sail again early once her deck is done.

Interesting developments on the Russian Navy front. Tanker Ivan Bubnov is now moving south in the Aegean Sea! Possibly elements of the returning Black Sea Task Force that were on their way home have had new orders in regards to the current situation in Syria?

The Russians will want to have the large landing ships, frigates and destroyers that were part of the recent Black Sea Task Force in the region for possible evacuation plans of Russian citizens.

Positional information from the Morse Code International weather from 6th December, 06 UTC

The Russians will likely want a Tug, such as the MB-304, to remain with the large landing ships that were part of the Black Sea Task Force. It will be interesting to see if the Tug deploys south?

The Black Sea Fleet landing ships, Novocherkassk and Saratov, made a visit to Tartus, Syria during late November. The ocean going Tug, MB-304 call sign RMYZ, was noted off southern Cyprus heading east during that period. If the landing ships redeploy from the Aegean then likely the tug will follow?

The landing ships Novocherkassk and Saratov docked in the port of Tartus for several hours but their crews did not go ashore, the Interfax and ITAR-TASS news agencies reported. "They loaded up on fuel and water and had minor repairs. No shore leave was planned for the crew," a source in the naval chief of staff told the Interfax news agency. ITAR-TASS said the call took place at the end of November and lasted several hours.

Would you agree that the chances of any US action in the M.E. is extremely slim with only one carrier in the region?

Simply there for precautionary measures.

This would be where the F-35 would come in handy. We could deploy a couple of LHAs loaded with 35s, thus upping the number of attack aircraft without deploying another full sized carrier.

Absolutely. The US always fights with a heavy airpower contingent. Even with bases in Turkey, they like to have multiple sources of aircraft. With just one carrier there, and it being way out of position, I don't see any major action coming. Usually they like to have three to four in the area before anything big happens. Maybe if she was in a better position. We MIGHT see limited strikes, but I'm not going to hold my breath on anything big happening.

Looks like something was lost in the translation of the Turkish media webpage? The following links puts the movements into perspective. A deployment to Syria is not planned and all vessels will have returned home by the end of the year.

Black Sea Fleet's Anti-Piracy Mission Frustrated.

Black Sea Fleet (BSF) will not be able to attend the international anti-piracy campaign in the Gulf of Aden by the end of the current year. Passage of BSF task unit through the Suez Canal to the Indian Ocean was canceled; the ships will return to Sevastopol in mid-Dec, a source in Russian General Staff told Interfax. "That was caused by the situation in the East Mediterranean. No instructions to evacuate Russian citizens from the Gaza Strip were received", said the interviewee. "Black Sea Fleet flagship missile cruiser Moskva has already set a course for Sevastopol and is expected to arrive there next week. Destroyer Smetlivy is performing assigned tasks near the Crete Island, landing ships Novocherkassk and Saratov along with two auxiliary vessels are gearing up for passing Bosporus and Dardanelles straits with the view to return to home bases by the year end", said the source. "Request to pass the straits has been already addressed to Turkish authorities", he added. Due to changes in BSF anti-piracy deployment plans, only Pacific Fleet (PF) task unit will be on the counter-piracy mission off Somalia since Dec 2012 through Jan 2013. Ships of the PF task unit are to arrive there in the next week. The source added that BSF landing ships Novocherkassk and Saratov had called at Russian Navy's maintenance base in Syrian port Tartus in Nov 2012.

Black Sea Fleet's anti-pirate mission in Indian Ocean cancelled.

"The ships' cruise to the Indian Ocean through the Suez Canal to ensure the security of civilian navigation in the Gulf of Aden has been cancelled because of the situation in the Eastern Mediterranean. No instructions have been received regarding evacuation of Russian citizens from the Gaza Strip," the source said. The unit's operations in the area will be phased out stage by stage, the source said. The first to go to Sevastopol will be the Black Sea Fleet flagship, the Moskva missile cruiser, which should reach the homeport next week. The Moskva will be followed by the Smetlivy destroyer, which is currently on a mission near Crete. The Novocherkassk and the Saratov landing ships and also two support vessels are preparing for the cruise and should return to their base several days later. "Russia has already filed a bid for its ships to pass through the Dardanelles and the Bosporus," he said.

It has passed through the Suez Canal on Dec. 1st, didn't it? Or am I thinking of a different ship?

Anyway, Turkey and Israel are probably bricking it. Assad knows he is on the way out and he already announced his intention to burn the world down before he leaves Syria.

Also, wasn't there an Iranian ship heading into the Gaza- controlled waters? And a couple Russian Destroyers?

I think the U.S. are just positioning their fleet off Israel to counter any moves that Russia and/or Iran might make.

It's just a precaution. The U.S. won't fight Russia. They know what would happen if they did.
