Wow! Awesome input so far folks!!! Impressive!

Maybe tonight I'll toss in a few happy toned freebies if I can find the time.

Thanks so much, everyone, for the contributions to the contest. God I love this place!

I know it's supposed to be "Christmas-y", but for some reason this avatar makes me think of the Hellraiser movies. No offense intended; it's a good thing!

It represents an Islamic tradition called the day of Ashura which is the 10th day of Muharram as a day of mourning for the martyrdom of Husayn ibn Ali, the grandson of Muhammad at the Battle of Karbala in the year 61 AH (October 10, 680 CE). Some sects of the Islamic faith like the Shi'a remember by flogging themselves with flails made of chain and they parade in the streets. They bleed in the remembrance of the sacrifices that were made for them. The Islamic calender is based on the Moon cycles not the Sun cycles so there is an 18 day difference each year for this remembrance and it rotates through the year as a result. This year it happens to be today.

Interesting. I never heard of that before.
Goes to show we learn something new every day! Is it a common practice?

In some Shi'a regions of Muslim countries such as Afghanistan, Iran, Iraq, Turkey, Azerbaijan, Pakistan, Lebanon, and Bahrain, the Commemoration of Husayn ibn Ali has become a national holiday and most ethnic and religious communities participate in it.[citation needed] Even in predominantly Hindu majority but secular country like India, Ashura (10th day in the month of Muharram) is a public holiday.

en.wikipedia.org...

Edit to add: Suffice it to say a Google image search of the celebration is not a pretty sight but 10s of thousands flog themselves every year.

You are so welcome! I am a newbie at this sort of thing as well so I figured I'd lend a hand.

You should use it as your avatar- it is precious!!!
