ATS/ers -

Head on over to Space.com to watch the announcement today about NASA's findings (starts in 10 mins thereabouts). Hopefully something amazing is shared with us today - I remain optimistic.

Watch live: www.space.com...

Last week's lead ATS story on this topic: NASA says Mars discovery isn't 'earthshaking' after all

UPDATE:
Mars rover finds complex chemicals but no organic compounds ... yet

Although NASA's Curiosity rover hasn't yet confirmed the detection of organic compounds on Mars, it's already seeing that the Red Planet's soil contains complex chemicals — including signs of an intriguing compound called perchlorate.

source:cosmiclog.nbcnews.com...

***************************************************************
Edit to add, updating as it happens (wrapped up)

Main lede: Complex chemicals found, possibly organic compounds but more science needed. Carbon, oxygen and chlorine methane as perchlorates broke up and reacted with carbon (NASA doesn't know where the carbon is coming from). Water is present. NASA needs to do more science... not enough organic compounds found to be "really interesting." NASA looking for a more "rich organic environment for the rover."

Subheads: The atmosphere on Mars is sensitive to weather and climate

Curiosity is accomplishing its goals.

Analyzing a modern environment in a new environment (in crater)

ATS note: photos from Curiosity go to the NASA website right away before analyzed by scientists - so RAW file goes from rover to earth satellite to website.

Notes from conference:

Organic compounds - maybe something found on Mars, maybe something that came along on the trip. Or maybe something that came from space. Needs more science.

Likely organic compounds we're made by team and did not exist on Mars - meaning the rover science lab created the compounds didn't happen naturally.

Oxygen and chlorine compounds are what was found: perchlorates (or not found, listening to NASA they have no idea, needs more science again).

Carbon found in simple organic compound, NASA will look at isotope ratios.

Most important or unexpected thing found?: "Landed on Ancient Riverbed"

Thank you very much for posting this Jason.

I've never seen a live announcement from NASA before and hopefully today they might reveal something good.

Didnt they do this crap once before? Make an announcement about a significant find only to say theyll tell us what it is in a couple of weeks, build up hype and suspense, then tell us something stupid.

Thanks for the Link.

I love watching the viewer count increase. Science needs to be as public as possible.

yeah, so, I know it just started and all, but seriously, there is a fat guy is talking about sand....and making food references. They just threw this together. This cannot be what got them originally excited.....Not even a hard core nerd can find this groovy.

Ooh, the soil is uniform and is what we expected.....the drift is inactive sometimes.....NICE!

UPDATE:

No organics found, yet they say there was some evidence of organics. I don't get it yet.

I am guessing it's a false positive. That is what they are going with. They heated the soil sample and measured the gas released.

Yeah, he is talking about the test and explaining how they can get the results they did.

UPDATE:
They are not sure if the carbon and chlorine found are terrestrial. They found it, but they say...No. Not good enough.

OK THEY FOUND (chemical residuals of) ORGANICS, But are downplaying it.

We have NOT found any organics
but we have found organics
is organics life ?
huh ?

AAAAAAArrhh I hate you NASA... go away with your sand

I find, looking at the order of the specialist presenting,(maybe) we´ll get a picture of a bacteria they found?

WIKI says an organic compound is : An organic compound is any member of a large class of gaseous, liquid, or solid chemical compounds whose molecules contain carbon.

So not life, just a chemical.

Yes but I thought organic compounds usually come from life forms, as opposed to inorganic carbon the precursor.
Maybe I've got it wrong.
Anyway, here's another conference link.

Now they are doing questions...

Let me get people up to date what it was all about..

NASA : We made some holes in ground

NASA : LOTS OF LOTS OF sand and other sand stuff, its very fine SAND !

NASA : Its like food, very fine flour, YOU HUNGRY YET !! Hahahah

NASA : Well there was some gas in those holes..

NASA : Organic compound gassy stuff.. dont know for sure yet, need to do more thinking

NASA : Organic compund gas thingy is nothing special really.. its everywhere inside sand stuff perhaps

NASA : Questions ?

See? its just BS once again. Do you guys ever think that when they make these initial announcements of a "huge" find, that its a scientist talking out of turn and they use the time before the official announcement to come up with some bs story, like this one?
