Photoshop doesn't sell on the shelves anymore. You buy a "cloud" license for their product, give them your CC info, and pay $20/mo.

I have to do that with InDesign at work.

What is the best free download for these projects & one that will help with web design?
I will have to learn everything from scratch but I'm into it. I'm doing the online wed design
classes at the moment & I thought doing something here on ATS would go along with it & be fun.
Thanks for everyone's input here as you are all great at what you do!

Some of us use GIMP --free -- which is a spin off of Photo Shop

Here is a thread that Druid started for help/tips with GIMP:

The Collaborative Gimp tutorial for ATS members

It's good enough to get started

ETA: Image scale----200x440---is most common size

You don't have photoshop?

Dude, where have you been?

I hope you get it for Christmas, I use photoshop for work all the time,( I even created all the Banners at work in photoshop) and my husband has the program on his side of the computer at home so I can use that for stuff for ATS from time to time. (although I don't go on his side without permission because I think that is essentially like going through someone's wallet)

I really do like it a lot! You will too once you learn it, there is a lot to learn though, I am STILL learning it!

Yes I just learned the Batching, as well as Variables.... Last week I output 1078 cards...

Here's an example of the first set of 49 cards... total of 22 sets later...

Curious...is that your business?

I have thought about ways to leverage, in the future, the graphics skills I am teaching myself to make me indepedant (or, at least have secondary revenue streams).

Its not actually, its a project I did for the company thats on the site...

My business revolves around webhosting, webdesign, graphics etc....

I do e-book covers as well, there's a good 'action script' that you can buy for PS so that you can create amazing covers for cd's, dvd's, books, etc.... i'll show an example in a minute...

Cheers

Any time

Agarta got me hooked on it last year, and yes, the user face/menu can be intimidating at first.

But you get used to it
I've still got a bunch to learn
It's been fun tinkering around with it however

I'm still not near as good as many of my fellow ATSers here, but one day, maybe

I know enough to get by tho

********ATTENTION**********

I downloaded gimp from that link and spent an hour chasing malware around my p.c. I'm sure it wasn't intentional but it was there.

It's a programme called snap.do and it hijacks your browsers.

Just be VERY careful where you download gimp from. Even though I downloaded it from what I thought was the official site I got the malware.

Just a heads up
In case you need it this is how to remove snap.do from your computer.

When you draw path points you can edit points whenever you like, you don´t have to wait when path is finished. Just keep cntrl button down and you can select and drag a points and adjust them. To select last point (corner points ) and continuing the path after adjusting other points keep alt button down when selecting the last point. You can delete points by having cursor over the point and hit delete key.

i've tried a few tutorials. The movements of the paths when laying them down doesn't feel natural. The curves are the hardest to understand....but it is just the button usage.

I do most photoshopping on my personal laptop. I don't use a mouse on it (i use my mousepad) as long as I am not working in excel (where I either must have an external mouse, or an intellipoint mouse in the middle of the keyboard like a Thinkpad has). Perhaps if i tried on my work laptop instead, or just plugged my mouse in, it could become more intuitive.

One thing is for certain: i don't "get it" because I haven't tried hard enough yet.
Now to find the time for focus.....i know I have some of that around here some where.......

Your fonts should load up automatically in photoshop.

The brushes, styles, patterns, etc....what you have for GIMP should work in photoshop if you put it in the right place
Let me know if you want me to share what I have with you.

Good day Ladies and Gentlemen of the Avatar Ninja Arts,

Would any of you be inclined to resize this for use as an Avatar without the aspect ratio getting all screwy?

I would be eternally grateful.

Damnit though, you gave me more options. I think I'm going to have to be Scrooge.
