I definitely like the concept of the transparent backgrounds and the bordered artwork

It might be cool to make some fancy bordered "frames" with a blank interior, so that anyone can use GIMP's "paste into" function to border their existing backgrounds or other artwork.

I think that we will need to follow the sizing guidelines that Druid figured out. If there is a frame, it does no good to cut off the bottom.

I would like a new avatar , but not much good a creating these things myself.

Can someone make one for me please.

I would like something that speaks of new beginnings in a conspiratorial
and cosmic kind of way.. Thanks.

I"m not sure 180x455 is the right size. Druid's looks like it is repeating at the bottom.

I never really worried too much about the very bottom of the backgrounds before, but yeah, with the frames it makes a difference.

And yours is cut off at the bottom.

I'm wondering about this.

The uploader says 180x700. The standard, we know, is 180x480. There's missing pixels we need to account for.

Where are they?

I've noticed 180x480 seems to trim about 1/2 a cm off the bottom. Maybe try resizing the length a fraction shorter at say 180x470 and see what happens...

Mind you, I also notice some of the animated avatars are slightly out of alignment on my main computer, but seem to line up ok on the laptop I'm using. A screen resolution issue perhpas?

Sure have.

I'm having a look for a few ideas now, although I'm stuck using a reaaaally old paint program, so I'll do the best I can for the time being.

Give us an hour or so, and I'll have something up.

Sorry about that. We have a tendency of getting started on ideas right away and sometimes forget to let the person know its a go. I am sure there are more than a few of us already on it.

SO says in the 2010 avatar rules thread...

Pixel Space: The new "visible" space for background images is 180 pixels wide and 400-480 pixels tall (depending on other factors in your mini-profile).

...In search of "other factors"

A big part of the "Factors" is the avatar size. I have found that a shorter avatar tends to compress the visible area of the background.

So here's first pass. Just kind of went with the alien rebirth kind of angle.

I actually don't see how it is possible to display a full 480 length. It seems anything over a 240 length transparent avatar adds nothing and anything under a 240 compresses the background.

Mine are all 480 and I use a full size avy at 240. I have made avys that didn't make it to a length of 240 and it cuts the bottom off my 480 backgrounds. I don't know it has been so long since I have made one shorter it may no longer be the issue.

Thank you , it looks promising , a bit unsure about the blue triangle angle. The alien head in the middle of the frame
looks great, could you make it a little bigger. Don't want to sound ungrateful.. just my thoughts so far and i really appreciate your time as i cant do these things my self.
