n a blockbuster announcement, Mcor, the makers of the IRIS color 3D printing system based on plain old paper, say they've struck a huge deal with print services giant Staples to supply 3D printing equipment for their numerous print and copy centers.

This will obviously take a while to implement, so Staples Printing Division is starting the process by rolling it out in Belgium and the Netherlands in Q1 2013 and then "will be rolled out quickly to other countries" according to Staples.

I am in no way promoting staples with this news, rather looking at the potential change that this news will make on society. 3D printing will become available to the average person around the world. How soon will the paper print move to plastics and then even metal. The ability for the average person to repair of create items for themselves will actually have major economic effects long term. In the future will will look back at this time as people looked back on the invention of the Radio.

I remember hearing, back in the mid-1990s, that the WWW will revolutionise people's lives. It would be a massive level playing field where we could all be publishers, where we could all promote our own art and music, where important ideas could be shared instantly.

Almost 20 years later and we have Facebook, more porn than we could ever masturbate to and /b/.

I'm seeing people talk about 3d printing in the same revolutionary terms as the early WWW years. How we can all be our own entrepreneurs, artists, and have our own artisan mini-production lines. The reality is, in 20 years time, we'll be creating plastic vaginas with Facebook photographs of girls we went to school with stuck on the top. Or Staples will be rickrolled into creating Battle Toads figures or similar.

I want a crappy job at staples......shut up and give me no money for the privilege of making my own crap.

I'm looking forward to the cascade effect...

Since Staples will be doing it (I wish they'd started the program here in Utah!), other print places will be doing it, too. OfficeMax/CopyMax, FedEx/Kinko's...eventually, the neighborhood office supply store.

The cost of 3d printing will go down, the quallity and speed of equipment will go up, as will ease-of-use.

Now this is awesome. They will probably charge an arm and a leg for something small and simple though.

Cant wait to see if there will be hovering copyright police or staff told to call the cops if they think you are printing a firearm receiver or part.

Give it 5 more years and you will have your own/personal 3D printer for a reasonable price... be quick to buy one before its outlawed or heavily regulated!
