UN recognition of Palestine
UN recognition of Palestine based on pre-1967 borders will legitimize the Palestinian cause and help gather greater support from the international community.
Non-member state status would empower Palestinian officials to seek assistance or security at the International Criminal Court.

Palestinians could use this forum to bring action against Israel for what they view as violations of international law regarding their treatment in the West Bank and Gaza, including war crimes and the construction of Jewish settlements.
But it works both ways, Israel could ask for the prosecution of the Palestinian side over rockets fired from Gaza.

Also ongoing sanctions from Israel could also jeopardize its long-standing peace with Egypt, where a fragile transitional government struggles to maintain security.

United States alienating the Arab and Islamic world
The opposition of Washington, is exposing it to criticisms of hypocrisy were they were supporting a rebellion in Libya and Egypt and Syria, but opposing the self-determination of Palestinians, making its ability to mediate any Israeli-Palestinian peace void and cultivate alliances with nascent Arab democracies.

American threat to cut even more foreign aid, on which the Palestinians are heavily dependent, would exacerbate the fiscal crisis in Palestinian territories, when (UNESCO) voted to recognize Palestine as a full member, the United States withdrawed roughly $60 million in financial support for the organization in October 2011.

Officials in the militant Hamas group
Officials in the militant Hamas group, which ousted Fatah forces to take control of the Gaza Strip in 2007, first rejected the Palestinians initiative as a unilateral measure.
They did not support the move since it would concede parts of "historic Palestine" and "infringe" upon the right of return for the hundreds of thousands of Palestinian refugees.
But a couple of days ago, senior Hamas officials said they welcomed the move by Abbas The National.

Ending Security Restrictions
Israel's easing of security restrictions that encumber the flow of commerce to Palestine is vital and with this UN recognition of Palestine, this can now happen faster, and the constant building of illegal settlements can now be legally enforced to stop, which in my opinion is the best route to peace.
Unlike America and Israel i believe this is more than a symbolic victory but will trigger diplomatic and financial retribution from the United States and Israel, who claim it will incite regional unrest, which i don't believe will happen, the only regional unrest will come from Israel, who sulks when she can't get her own way.

Now you have to ask yourself why all of the nations voting in favor of a Palestinian state aren't going to pick up the rest of the tab and then some? Shouldn't be a problem, right?

And the senior Hamas official who made this statement is scheduled to retire, so now there's a new excuse to "change their minds".

You say that because you haven't studied the Muslim terrorist groups in the region or their religion.

And what gives you the assumption i haven't studied the Muslim terrorist groups in the region..

But like all extreme groups, 'he who screams the loudest gets heard the most', we have these in every nation on the planet, no one is void of these kind of people, the majority of Gazans and West Bankens just want to live in peace and earn there own money and get on with their lives.

Israel are great story tellers, we can't take that away from them, but end of the day the world has spoken, and all agree that diplomatic routes are the best solution for peace, shame American and Israeli governments don't agree.

By America Voting no to recognition of Palestine, what this has done is isolated America even more alongside right wing Israel, bringing soft power of america even lower, just because America is a military superpower, it doesn't mean they are respected.

And anyone who oppose's American and Israeli government ideology are terrorists right? our way or the highway.

the so called peace process has produced nothing for so many decades, in desperation anything is better than the same nothing.

and the continued building of illegal settlements shows that israel wants to continue the status quo, the slow strangulation of the palestinians.

the usa is the most incompetent mediator anyone could imagine, imo.
american internal politics makes them useless when looking at this problem.
the americans are in a straight jacket when it comes to israel, they can only give them ever more money and support whatever they do.

a very poor choice of mediator.

below all the static of diplomacy, it's evident that only the continued status quo is acceptable to the usa and israel.

when the main players want no solutions, there are no solutions.

and the continued building of sttlements just grows the problem, proof that there is no desire fot the peace process.

Israel never wants peace until they completely own the west bank and gaza, and American politics and media is too deeply rooted with Israeli apologists and loobyists.

By America voting No while practically the whole world voted yes, it really highlights how bad the situation is in American politics.

I was having a conversion with a American today over this topic and he was a hardcore Israeli supporter, and just refuse to understand when i was telling him, "Whats makes you think American and Israel are right over everyone else on the planet on this subject", all he could do is come out with the same old aggressive scripture pumped out from the American Zionists media, completely avoiding my question.

If you had done any homework on Hamas at all, you wouldn't even have to ask.

Read Hamas' Charter dated 1988.

But like all extreme groups, 'he who screams the loudest gets heard the most', we have these in every nation on the planet, no one is void of these kind of people, the majority of Gazans and West Bankens just want to live in peace and earn there own money and get on with their lives.

Then tell them to deal with Hamas on their own so Israel and the U.S. don't have to.

Israel are great story tellers, we can't take that away from them, but end of the day the world has spoken, and all agree that diplomatic routes are the best solution for peace, shame American and Israeli governments don't agree.

Too bad the rest of the world isn't financially supporting all of these Palestinians. Israel and the U.S. are.

Seriously, if you knew anything about the region you would know that Iraq is a mess because half of the government is Sunni Muslim and the other half is Shiite Muslim and they're killing each other . When the Palestinian Authority can work it out with Hamas, maybe there's half a chance of them forming a government that can represent the people in Gaza effectively, but the reality of that happening is slim to none. Israel and the U.S. understand this. You don't.

You might think the situation in Syria is just normal citizens uprising against their leader, but that table has turned and now all of the Muslim terrorists are fighting each other for who's going to take over. Expect the same from "Palestine". So far Abbas has been trying to get Hamas to agree to new elections in Gaza since July 2010 and it hasn't happened yet. You can guess why.

Speaking of said folks, this event will just make them view Israel being in a position of weakness, ready for a coup de grace. Expect those terrorist attacks to get worse just as soon as Iran gets those new weapons shipments smuggled in from the Sinai Peninnsula, while Egypt turns a blind eye.

Israel was denied peace since 1948, by all of their Arab neighbors. Whether Israel controls West Bank and Gaza, will not determine peace in the region. Gaza has been unoccupied for years, and Israel could have easily kept it under full control in 2008 conflict. The Palestinian leadership has to make unilateral efforts towards peace, and they cannot do that when the radicalist elements within (mostly HAMAS) continue to fuel the conflict. All of the recent conflicts involving Israel were initiated by HAMAS or Hezbolah, not by Israel.

Are you going to claim that Palestinians want peace and Israel does not? On what grounds?

I don't usually take America's side, and I am not an American. But please explain why the US should back Palestinians instead of Israel? Virtually all recent conflicts and clashes involving the US (other than North Korea), and attacks against US and its interests, involved radical Islamist elements, much like HAMAS and Hezbollah. Palestinian terrorist groups, including HAMAS, have attacked US interest on multiple occasions and made it very clear after 9/11 that US is their enemy.

There is only one country in the Middle East, that US can consider its long-time ally, and that is Israel. Arabs never were unconditional allies, and were always allies out of short-term opportunity. And this will not change anytime soon, regardless of what stance US takes on Palestine.

You are discounting some pretty large countries when you say "practically the whole world". The countries that voted "yes" are not directly involved in mediating the Israel-Palestine conflict, and are not really concerned with the peace process and the implications of this resolution on it. Moreover, the countries that voted "yes" are not the ones that are providing the majority of funds for supporting and sustaining Palestine.

Why should the US vote Yes? What did those who claim to represent the Palestinians have done to convince the US that they can be trusted with a state? And don't bring up the suffering of poor stateless Palestinian people - what has the PLO and HAMAS done? A state run by these organizations, is not a state that will pave the way for peace - it is a state that will utilize all of its resource to restart the conflict.
