In reference to scaring the children....
My reading class, consisting of 10 students aged 9-10, discussed this briefly today.
One student popped off with "Did you know the world is going to end when we are on Christmas break?"
That started all 10 mouths jabbering about every detail they had heard.
I told them that some people have the idea that the world will end on 12/21 but it will NOT. Everything will be fine.
To which at least half of them started screaming BUT IT COULD! IT COULD HAPPEN RIGHT NOW!
I told them yes, it could happen right now but it isn't very likely is it? Then I redirected back to our unit test.
None of them were one bit scared. They were all laughing and talking about stupid ways the world could end. They were mostly excited they wouldn't
have to return to school after the break.
I will say, though. When I was young I got a hold of one of those "Sun" magazines that gives horrible predictions about the end of the world. I
read something about the world ending in the next year or something and it scared the ever loving heck out of me. I was sick to my stomach and
worried for days. I can definitely see how this talk could get some kids upset.

I personally don't think anything is going to happen, but I wouldn't just go with "well, NASA said so"
