EXPOSED: Here Are The Tricks That Fox News Uses To Manipulate Statistics On Its Graphics

www.businessinsider.com

A lot of the issue comes in the way the data is presented. While most of the time the data is grounded in fact, by skewing the axes, using the wrong kind of chart, or just changing where the points should be on the graph, Fox is able to change the way that the information is interpreted.

A good look at how Fox News can visually manipulate things "legally" but still have them appear as dramatic. I'm sure this comes as no surprised to anyone but I figured it'd be good evidence to have.

Now, don't get me wrong, I'm not trying to single out Fox News here. Even though I think they are scum, I think all sources of mainstream media are scum and I'm sure that MSNBC, CBS, or any other top dog media source uses these same visual techniques to influence their biased opinions.

These are just the ones they have singled out but I'm sure that you guys would be able to find many more examples. If you ever happen to see a data graphic on TV from a big media source, make sure you check it out good.

The Left is no different, they used to do the exact same thing with Ron Paul and his election results.

I'm sure they've done it on other issues as well.

At the end of the day, theyre all on the same team: more wars, bigger police state, run away debt, undying support for izrael etc.

One day they will realise they are doing nothing more than staring into a lense.. It may be 20,000 years away with the mindsets of people these days, but it will happen.

Soooo... Basically, you admit that Fox News is lying and cheating? And your only choice of answer to this is to accuse someone else (without any proove) doing the same?

Well.. I would declare Fox News therefore the loser. The winner? Everyone not watching that newsmockermontary channel.

I think it's just that most of us are tired of the sanctimonious left prattling on about Fox, but never having a problem with media that CLEARLY lies, fear mongers and spins in favor of the Democratic party on a regular basis.

There are three types of Lies:

Lies, Damn Lies and then Statistic!

Every and I mean EVERY news outlet will skew statistic to suit their bosses agenda.

What is their agenda you ask?

To keep us, aka the sheep, fighting between ourselves long enough so that the real powers can continue to do what every they want to. It called to Left Right Para-dime.

What is that?

Left Right Para-dime, the phrase refers to a political theory that members of opposing major political parties such as the Republican and Democratic parties in the United States share common interests and goals, as well as a covertly unified ruling authority over the political issues of the masses. The two major political entities act in concert to create divisiveness among the population while keeping control of the political spectrum.

Who runs the Media?

6 Major companies do!

Wonder if any were exempt from paying corporation taxes? Why yes they were!

Here they are:

General Electric

General Electric is a true behemoth: the conglomerate is the world’s third largest company with market capitalization of nearly $370 billion and annual revenue of $173 billion (2007). The company produces practically everything – from aircraft engine to locomotives to medical devices.
GE’s media holding includes television networks NBC and Telemundo, 27 television stations in the United States and many cable TV networks, including the History Channel, A&E, and Sci Fi Channel. It also owns the popular web-based TV website Hulu.

Time Warner

Time Warner is the world’s largest media and entertainment company – it owns major operations in film, TV, print, Internet, and telecommunications. Time Warner has an annual revenue of $50.5 billion (2008) – the equivalent of the entire GDP of Luxembourg.
Like cartoons? Time Warner’s got you covered with Cartoon Network and Adult Swim. Classic movies? Check (Turner Classic Movies). And who can forget CNN and Headline News? Both are Time Warner properties.
Note: CW is co-owned by Time Warner and CBS.

The Walt Disney Company

You may associate it with amusement parks, but The Walt Disney Company has grown to be one of the world’s largest media and entertainment corporation since its founding as an animation studio by brothers Walt and Roy Disney in 1923.
The Walt Disney Company owns the ABC television network, with more 200 affiliated stations reaching nearly 100% of all U.S. television market, as well as dozens of niche cable networks. True to its cartoon animation origin, Disney captures its viewers early – it counts millions of young children as its audience with kids channels like the Disney Channel.

News Corporation

Rupert Murdoch’s News Corporation is a behemoth: it is the largest media company in the world by market capitalization ($38 billion). For most people, the conservative news channel Fox comes foremost to mind when asked what they think of Murdoch’s media empire – but the company’s holding is far larger: it includes Asia’s Star TV Network, the National Geographic Channel and even the iconic TV Guide network.
Don’t watch TV? Even if you prefer to browse the Internet, most likely you’ve visited News Corp’s property, which include Hulu (owned in partnership with GE through its subsidiary NBC Universal) and the social networking giant MySpace.

CBS

CBS (which used to stand for the Columbia Broadcasting System) is not sometimes called the Tiffany Network for nothing: the company is known for its high programming quality. It is currently the most watched television network in the United States, and reached more than 103 million homes in the country.
Both CBS and Viacom (see below) are owned by multi-billionaire Sumner “content is king” Redstone, through his holding company, National Amusements.

Viacom

Viacom stands for “Video and Audio Communication” – and true to that name, the company owns a large number of cable and satellite television networks (the company was split from CBS Corporation in 2005, though both have the same majority owner).
In 2007, Viacom filed a $1 billion lawsuit against Google and YouTube for copyright infringement and recently a federal judge granted Viacom’s request for data of all YouTube users. The blogosphere has since called for a boycott of all Viacom properties – so that means no MTV, VH1, Nickelodeon or – gasp – Comedy Central for you!

This post, as good intention as you think it is, is nothing more than feeding into the left-right para-dime.

As a statistician, I see this crapola all the time in numerous depictions in the news, documentaries, etc.
It's appalling to me - although when I worked for fedgov the management was always wanting the most dumbed down version of the data I could prepare - remember 6th grade reading level is the "gold standard" in written communications. So there's a bit of "wiggle room" on presenting data - but the OP's examples are clearly fradulent and misleading in a purposeful way, not merely oversimplifications.
Another consideration when looking at POLL numbers is the "universe" of persons participating, I see many undocumented assumptions on polls all the time - so I have two suggestions:

1. ALWAYS READ THE NUMBERS NOT JUST THE PICTURE!
2. QUESTION THE ASSERTIONS MADE ABOUT THE DATA!

Please, never again in your life, accuse me of empowering the bipartisan illusion. I don't give a rat's rear-end that Fox just so happens to be right wing and that I am bringing manipulating statistics to the light of other's. If it was a leftwing news source, I wouldn't hesitate. If it was a centralist, libertarian, fascist, socialist, progressive, communist, biblical, or even the Rhinoceros Party of Canada, I would do the same thing. All mass media has an agenda, and all of them will use manipulating tactics to steer their viewers astray. It doesn't matter what their political affiliation is.

I have never advocated the two-party system and I never will. So, I "hope you now understand that your post, as good intention as you think [it was], [was] nothing more [than a rash assumption based]."

Lest ye assume again, MY INTENTIONS are to bring forth some evidence and let people make up their own beliefs from that. It just so happens that MY OPINION is that all big name sources of media happen to be slightly corrupt and definitely biased to a point of skullduggery. NOT that "the right is bad, and the left is good" or vice versa. They're two sides of the shiny penny, any way.

LOL.

Show some proof for the claim that, "the left" used the same techniques to undermine Ron Paul.

Go on.

Sorry, I didn't read your second posting, so I corrected my wording. Didn't mean to blast you.

My point might have been lost, so let me rephrase it. THEY, all MSM, LIE.

Bringing this to the attention that FOX manipulated statistic is like bringing to the attention that the US Go'ment spends too much money on toilet seats or screwdrivers. Yea, we all know this, so what? So does everyone else too.

Everyone who buys into cable network "programming" deserves the skewed facts.
So, basically, if you watch this garbage and base your info from it, shame on you.
Mainstream media isn't here to create intelligent viewers...it's here to influence them.

Anyone who actually believes 100% what they see on TV, especially news programs, is gullible.
Gullible people make the best consumers and that's all television seems to create. Consumers.
If that's all you allow yourself to know, and don't research anything for yourself...
You only have yourself to blame.

People just need to turn the damn television off.
Maybe then it wouldn't have such an influence.

The "news" outlets all skew things to match their current stand on something or someone. The more of a fish-wrap rag the worse they are. The Enquirer is famous for using a stock picture of some celebrity that Satanizes them if they are knocking them, and next week they are praising the same celebrity and guess what, the picture they run with the story makes them look like a saint.

As to statistics, Paolo Magrassi said it best, "If You Torture The Data Enough, It Will Confess Anything"

A former colleague of mine, Paolo Magrassi, used to say this when challenging benchmarking reports or statistics or quantitative analysis.

None of those show what was shown in the OP?

Not everything is about Ron Paul you know?

As for the "left" being in anyway responsible for who the GOP nominated for President, well... I wish that we're true, but we both know that Romney was the GOP candidate of choice, Paul didn't even win his home state, and Paul did a LOT better in unregulated online polls than he did in traditional polls, because his cult flooded them.

Oh come on, you are saying the same as gladtobehere - to which I commented up above. Fox does lie, or not? Which examples can you offer for some "leftist"-lies? How about some prove? Or even something conspicious?

Otherwise, my statement from above stands undefeated.

Well, I haven't watched Fox in years. I don't have cable either so I'm not watching any of the other channels. This tit-for-tat crap you guys are pulling is annoying. None of you understand how the media works. It's biased alright-toward government. They will do what they have to do to keep access. Fox simply plays to one half of the government. As for the "left", there is no left in the U.S. The U.S. has always been a deeply conservative country. Our left is every other developed countries "Center-right". And no, they had nothing to do with Ron Paul's defeat. You should try yelling at the GOP for that. The media merely played the tune the GOP wanted them to.

ah, thats all crap. True people who believe in progressive and liberal ideology make up none of the above groups that you claim snubbed Ron Paul. Im somewhat liberal and progressive, and i love RP. Furthermore, the groups you are claiming, MSNBC, CNN, etc are far from left. Obama is far from left. All groups listed are corporatist groups, and while maybe not quite as far right wing as the neocon supported fox and Mitt Romney, still fall far on the right end of the spectrum when compared to any other western industrialized nation in the world.

I agree with this, 99%.

I would only disagree to the extent that I think there is a small (and essentially powerless) left in America.

But yeah, America is on average Center-Right. Obama is Center-Right. Most of the TV news is Center-Right.

It reflects the population.
