Yesterday we had some fun here. What is the most stupid thing the Government has ever said. www.abovetopsecret.com...

The United States of America took the contest, oh, what contest, there was no contest. They put in such a strong team and frankly they didn't need the team. Bush Jr took the whole contest himself. Yes he was ably supported by such luminaries as Quale and Pelosi, not to mention Nixon, but honestly he could have taken everyone else on and still won.

I hope today's contest will even things out and give the rest of the world a chance.

Greatest speeches, speech excerpts or phrases of all time.

One per post please and may the best orators win.

Edit to add. Yesterdays thread was fun. This one will be just as fun, but with just the first page I think it may well force people to think about the world today. Please flag it so it stays in front of everyone, at least for a while.

Flags please.

John Adams, Speech quotes:

The jaws of power are always open to devour, and her arm is always stretched out, if possible, to destroy the freedom of thinking, speaking, and writing.

Sir Winston Churchill

Even though large tracts of Europe and many old and famous States have fallen or may fall into the grip of the Gestapo and all the odious apparatus of Nazi rule, we shall not flag or fail. We shall go on to the end. We shall fight in France, we shall fight on the seas and oceans, we shall fight with growing confidence and growing strength in the air, we shall defend our island, whatever the cost may be. We shall fight on the beaches, we shall fight on the landing grounds, we shall fight in the fields and in the streets, we shall fight in the hills; we shall never surrender, and if, which I do not for a moment believe, this island or a large part of it were subjugated and starving, then our Empire beyond the seas, armed and guarded by the British Fleet, would carry on the struggle, until, in God's good time, the New World, with all its power and might, steps forth to the rescue and the liberation of the old.

This is the first thing that came to my mind;

JFK's speech about secret societies and a monolithic and ruthless conspiracy...

This one also from Sir Winston Churchill is as valid today as it was when he first stated it. So many threads on ATS regarding the 2nd Amendment. Perhaps the citizens of the USA should tape this to the bathroom mirror.

"If you will not fight for right when you can easily win without blood shed; if you will not fight when your victory is sure and not too costly; you may come to the moment when you will have to fight with all the odds against you and only a precarious chance of survival. There may even be a worse case. You may have to fight when there is no hope of victory, because it is better to perish than to live as slaves."

Yes, history was made with that speech from a great orator.

Have you considered medicating your avatar?

Ooh, I got another one. The great Nigel Farage, leader of the UK Independence party, speech to the EU bosses, "Just who the hell do you people think you are?"

Once in a while you will stumble upon the truth but most of us manage to pick ourselves up and hurry along as if nothing had happened.

Winston Churchill quote which I believe hints on how much asleep to our surroundings we tend to be.

LoL...my avatar reflects my occasional dismay at some conversations I have had...

Another quote...not necessarily from a speech, not sure...

Thomas Jefferson (I could go on and on with Jefferson quotes, but this is one of my fav's)

"The policy of the American government is to leave their citizens free, neither restraining nor aiding them in their pursuits."

It seems all the warnings we ever needed were in fact provided by historical orators but, nobody listens.

History is a school without students.

Socialists cry “Power to the people”, and raise the clenched fist as they say it. We all know what they really mean—power over people, power to the State.
