Archbishop Richard Smith of Edmonton in remarks to the 130th international convention of the Knights of Columbus

The Archbishop said: “Our call at this moment is to affirm the right of religion to be active in the public square … to defend the freedom of people of faith and of religious institutions to act in accordance with their beliefs and nature; ... Believers are summoned now to stand up for their faith, even if they must suffer for doing so.”

This question of mine cuts to the issue of ultimate loyalty and authority. Is it proper that Jewish rabbis have the authority to dictate to the Pope what words are acceptable in Good Friday prayers?

I'm thinking specifically about Rabbi David Rosen, papal Knight Commander of the Order of St Gregory the Great, and International Director of Interreligious Affairs of AJC.

AJC Disappointed by New Latin "Prayer for the Jews"

February 5, 2008 - New York - The American Jewish Committee expressed disappointment today regarding the new text of the Latin liturgy's "Easter Prayer for the Jews" written by Pope Benedict XVI.

"While we appreciate that the text avoids any derogatory language towards Jews, it's regretful that the prayer explicitly calls for Jews to accept Christianity," said Rabbi David Rosen, AJC's international director of interreligious affairs. "This differs greatly from the text in the current universal liturgy that prays for the salvation of the Jews in general terms."

Last year, Pope Benedict authorized wider use of the traditional Latin Mass, which contained, in its original form, an Easter prayer calling for the conversion of Jews.

"We hope that through further dialogue, the full implications of the Second Vatican Council's affirmation of the Jewish covenant might lead to a deeper understanding of the value of the Torah as the vehicle of salvation for the Jewish people," said Rosen.

What position do the Knights of Columbus take on this issue? Should Catholic Christians be allowed the freedom to pray for "faithless Jews" in the privacy of their own churches and cathedrals or should they bow down to the opinions of rabbis?

Does Rabbi Rosen outrank the Pope? Are Jews exempt from needing Christ for salvation? Or is the Torah sufficient for salvation as Rosen says?
