Those steps on escalators move quite freely. I don't recomennd doing this but if you go up one and put your foot at the bottom of the step infornt of
you when it gets to the top it will lift up slightly, I have done it, it causes no harm but after seeing this I won't do it again.
So the board pushed down on the step (they are on a pivot) and raised the other side up allowing him to fall into the space.
Those steps are guided by a track and rise and fall according to the track guiding them.
The board got wedged between the ceiling and the step and as the step rose,the pressure increased eventually causing the step to fail.
Those steps are made out of aluminum and I have seen them break before.
There are many safety devices on escalators here in the US,but else where,well not so.
