Worried About The UN Controlling the Internet? No fear! USA to the Rescue!

Apparently, last Friday, the House and the Senate passed a resolution calling on Obama not to allow for the ceding of Internet control to the UN. Well, finally, our legislative branch gets something right.

But this all seems a tad bit fishy to me.

After all, we've suffered through all kinds of bills designed to grasp control of one of the last bastions of freedom on earth: Remember SOPA, CISPA, ACTA, and MEGAUPLOAD?

The powers that be have a sneaky way of introducing new ideas to us slowly, until they settle in and fester for years while we become accustomed to them. Look at our airports if you need a good example. We're already used to government control of our bodies in the name of terrorism.

Happily, as we have noted, the Executive and Legislative branches are in agreement, which means that the United States has zero interest in allowing for such an occurrence.

I'm not breaking out the champagne just yet. Keeping the Internet free will always be an ongoing battle.

The regulation of the internet is horrible media attention for any political candidate. I believe that both Republican and Democrat can agree that this type of bill if fundamentally wrong. I don't think the people would allow a bill from the UN to have any impact on US soil.

Good news though.

The government was due to give up control of the internet's root servers long ago but keep changing their mind.. as it stands now the government isn't even controlling the root servers, they delegated that out to other groups.. but they retain ownership and the ability to take control at any point.

Having control of the "root" servers is a very powerful tool and the US isn't very keen on doing so.. though the rest of the would would prefer that we do give it up FOR that reason..

If the government decided right now to wipe out abovetopsecret.com right now for whatever reason, all they would need to do is remove it from the root servers and it would effectively vanish .. only those of us who are tech savvy enough would be able to figure out how to get to the website by going around the root servers..

There's been enough concern about the amount of power that this gives that there are already initiatives by third parties to create open dns infractstructures that circumvent the root servers.. if that happens then there is no "control" of the internet per-say .. the only action the government would have is to try to force isp's to block things

For those who don't understand what a root server is .. this also provides a list of who's been delegated to operate those root servers.. but they are still all ultimately controlled by the US government. ( department of commerce )
