Having said that of course its fascinating that ancient civilisations had such in depth astronomical knowledge.
How and why they had such knowledge is astounding...
is it not enough that the Calender predicted the Alignment?
That is a feat worthy of great praise, without Enlightenment stories or end of the world scenarios. Without Cosmic upgrades, and Alien invasions, just plain simple observational science and Mathematics of the highest Calibre.
Fascinating Yes, something to wait on, with baited breath, never.edit on 24-11-2012 by Lagrimas because: (no reason given)

Here's the thing though, this "alignment" occurs twice a year every year. It has been happening on the winter solstice for the past few decades and will continue to do so for a few more years. This isn't even the most accurate alignment to occur on the solstice. That happened back in 1998.

YES, for some, it is.
i learned about the Maya waaaay back in the early 70s.
even then i seriously questioned the anticipated alignment ... i just didn't believe such a prediction for sooooo many years yet to come was possible from a time soooo very long ago. How fabulous !!
i agree with the OP that reverence and appreciation for such an ancient ppl to have acquired this knowledge should be emphasized
Yet the Maya are nowhere to be seen,
The Maya today number about six million people, making them the largest single block of indigenous peoples north of Peru

Thank you, I wish I had known before writing that.
That aside- the Maya still being here, how do their current beliefs coincide with their ancestor counterparts?
technically ?? Both.
Ok so what is it?Is it true that the Alignment will be planets, sun and galactic centre, big one off special, OR
is it just one of the same alignments we get all the time?
accepted phenomenon doesn't even apply, really.
I always browse the 2012 doom threads etc etc of course I do, I love ATS its my entertainment source, and knowledge fountain of the esoteric weird wacky wonderful and cryptic. But sometimes it is like a merry go round...
Im just not getting whether its an accepted phenomenon or not at the moment. Are Mayans awesomesause or just random flukes?

Since the Mayans were one of the first cultures to have a concept of zero and place value, it stands to reason that it's a cycle, not an end. With the concept of zero comes the concept of infinity and repeating cycles. We've already seen from studying them that they did understand repeating cycles and their calender was circular in shape, not linear. It's a cycle, not an end.
