The high number is no surprise, the economy tanked, nobody is hiring, many people who had a hard time finding a job before are nearly hopeless now. Thank god there is help for them. Thank god as a country we have a means to take care of people so that fewer suffer and die on the streets.

Welfare gets such a bad rep, but it's a lifeline for those who need it and so harshly judged by those who don't.

Social welfare is a double edged sword. You cant just let people die and suffer can you ? NO

But the flip side is a never ending beast of more control. What is worse? Given a long enough time line the latter is worse history has shown this over and over again.

TPTB want people to be helpless so they can deliver a grand solution the people will beg for because they have to. Can no one else see this?

You know, if the Obama admin just took all our money and gave us ALL foodstamp cards, and domicile cards, and alcohol cards, and cigarette cards, and automobile cards, then the government could just track and determine how we all should live.

They could certainly set a minimum standard of living for those who are willing and able to work, food stamps are a step towards that. You do realize that food stamps subsidize the wages for millions of people who work at Wal Mart, grocery store chains, fast food joints and other large retail outfits.

My husband works for a grocery store. The bulk of his hours are scheduled at the beginning of each month due to the huge influx of food stamps shoppers. The rest of the month in the store is pretty dead, and his hours are cut back. The other night, his boss told him that he had been running the store for 30 years and that this was the first time he had seen it this bad.

And the answer is......cut back your husbands wages and hours further? or make sure all employers pay a living wage so that people can buy food without food stamps?

Just like the stock market, previous results are not an indication of future performance.

There is point where a person has so much money it's ridiculous. I just hope that someday the uber wealthy will recognize they achieved such enormous wealth partially due to the substantial effort of the common man who they have exploited and willingly give a portion of their wealth back to society. Many already do, but a lot more of them need to step up to the plate voluntarily.

I'm not exclusively blaming the rich. They are certainly a factor. The "blame" is impossible to assign to only one group. Many groups are partially to blame. However, the uber rich could provide some real solutions, but so few even try because they really want to advance from a $500million net worth to Billionaire status.

If I had a net worth of $10million, I'd gladly donate 50%-75% of my future earnings to help out people in need. You could even call it taxes and I'd gladly pay it.

47,102,780 "Democratic" Votes.

Normal everyday working people will only wake-up to the pit-falls of Fascist Socialism after they do not receive any income taxes back one year and then the next year are taxed @ 75% flat rate to pay for this insanity, with eroded purchasing power to boot.

The next "Civil War" will be fought over slavery. Slavery to those who do not wish to contribute...

Well I bet I make more money than you-I make so much my wife doesn't even work, I own my own business, and I took the whole week off work-because I work so hard every other day, and I voted democrat. I don't see how democrat and food stamps correlate so well in your mind?
And since it seems you and only you have figured out how an economy works-you should run for president. It would be a shame if someone with your intelligence didn't get his message across to the world and solve all of their problems by making fun of people. That always make people look really really smart. That last statement is not true in any sense-I was mocking you in a professional manner that down-graded your intelligence-and I am sure your next statement will prove my theory correct.

Sorry about your conspiracy theories but the government stopped handing out cash assistance years ago. All that you can get is the Food Card, no one uses Food Stamps any longer and the term is outdated and obsolete as well as Health Care when needed.

The only people who can receive cash assistance are women with children or families in need. So if you really want to smack the 47 Mil around why don't you check into those families who have many children where neither parent works. Those are the real fiends who feast off of the programs. They are the ones working the system.

This number probably is alot lower than 47 Million maybe around 10 or 15 million hard liners with everyone else using the Food Card when needed.

Did you know that you can receive $200 a month on the Food Car if your income doesn't go over $1200 a month?

$1200 x 12 = $14,400 a year plus $2,400 a year in Food Card Suppliments. This is total yearly amount fo $16,800 total.

I'm not certain if the person is able to claim the $2,400 on their tax forms but they might be able to someway which would then make their tax return that much larger.

Mister Marbles sounds like a name that would be given to a maniac in movie like The Connection.

I have a question. Not trying to be a smart*ss. I'm no economist I don't understand
how some of this works. But if people are losing their jobs left and right, partially due
to so many jobs being outsourced overseas and partially because of what's been done
to our economy, the FEDS printing into infinity, etc., then what do you think a better
answer is? I'm not saying foodstamps are a good answer either. Definitely not long
term. Just wondering what you think a better answer is for these people. What do you
think they should do instead?

They should $@#$@$@ starve!

@$@$%% humans and Americans, they are all lazy and filthy unless they are rich!

Let's just state a fact

Conservatives love rich people

and

hate people who are struggling

Their policies are designed with this in mind

The government, in conservative eyes is not a tool of the people, it is a tool of the rich.

they make that a self fulfilling prophecy

Wouldn't the $2400 be counted as income? Making the tax return smaller?

Obama will feed us.
Obama will clothe us.
Obama will feed us.
Obama will provide us jobs.
Obama will solve foreign policy issues.
Obama will solve all domestic policy issues.
Obama will solve unemployment.

Obama, Obama, Obama.

Boy we have short memories don't we?

"Percent Increase In Beneficiaries During Mr. Bush's Presidency Was Higher Than It Has Been Under Mr. Obama."

For the most recent month with available data, October 2011, 46.2 million people were enrolled in the food stamp program, which is formally known the Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program (SNAP). Since Mr. Obama took office, the percent increase in enrollment has been 44.5 percent.

However, that percentage increase hardly makes Obama the "best food stamp president in American history," at least when you look at the question proportionally. The percent increase in beneficiaries during Mr. Bush's presidency was higher than it has been under Mr. Obama: The number of beneficiaries went from 17.3 million in 2001 to 28.2 million in 2008 - an increase of 63 percent in years that are mostly considered non-recessionary. - CBS News

Under Bush the number of people on Food Stamps increased a whopping 63%!
A much larger percent increase as compared to Obama.

Where was the panic and outrage back then?

That should really have sent the alarm bells ringing and at the very least...should make any conscious person with a reasonable amount of impartiality acknowledge that this country was headed for recession before Obama even took office.

The number of people on any form of government assistance is 49% now.
Before Bush left office it was 44% according to the census bureau.

It's a shame that the numbers have increased even by 5% and is getting to the point where it's almost half of the population, but it's shameful to try and distort the facts just because you dislike the president.

Don't oversimplify the issue for the sake of partisanship.

Whats the use of handing 47 Million poor people money? Educate them on how to make make it for themselves. Handing them a 1000 each wont help their situation, it might worsen it.

Throwing money at a problem has not proven effective throughout History. Billionaires already through money at all kinds of philanthropy but it doesn't change anything because the change must come start within the person in need and their immediate community.

Bush deserves much scorn.

But that was two elections ago.

It's Obama starring on the stage now.

IIt's his economy.
It's his domestic policies.
It's his foreign policies.

Foodstamp cards?

Obama owns it now.

It's only been four years.

Considering all of the economic problems we were already facing that's hardly enough time to fix everything. The last administration spent this country into the red. Something the 'fiscal conservatives' held them accountable for even if most of the rest pretended everything was fine in 2008. That not even mentioning the wars and the billions of "missing" reconstruction money.

It's Obama starring on the stage now.

Do you really think that every incoming president takes office with a blank slate in terms of the state of the nation at the time?

You inherit the mess and benefits of your predecessor.
It's always been that way.

If the new guy comes in when the country has a surplus only a fool would attribute it to him.
If the new guy comes in when the country is in a depression only a fool would blame him for it.

You can really only be held accountable for your own actions during your term(s) and hopefully make some positive changes for the country but even those changes may not really begin to take effect until you are gone.

Are you really telling me the billions of dollars that have been donated to charity has been wasted? Do you really think our society would be a better place if no one donated anything to the needy? I hope not. If so, I have nothing more to say to you.

In the context of this thread, we are talking about who pays for the basic necessities of life for those who can't afford it while living in the wealthiest country on the planet. Since the OP is clearly not even a multi-millionaire and has such a huge problem with a fraction of his taxes going towards feeding poor people, I proposed shifting the fiscal responsibility to people who should feel a lot less "taken" than the OP and his supporters.

In other words, unless you're a really greedy person with an 8 or 9+ figure net worth, my proposals don't hurt you, the OP or people like you at all. They would actually help you and people a lot poorer than you.

I just want to add, the foodstamp cards are a perfect indicator to Obama's policies.

He (Obama) doesn't want people off foodstamp cards. I'd be willing to guess that he'd prefer more people go on the dole (foodstamp-wise).

If you control the means to how and when people eat, you can control the populace.

Dunno if this was posted or not, but there are two portions of the ebt card; food stamps which is for food only and some few get cash, which they can spend on anything they want. Even with zero income and a child, I couldn't get the cash.

It was interesting borrowing toilet paper, deodorant etc from folk money wise. :/ But that's what I did.

I'm now finally working after 2 years of looking and I make about 700 a month total. Got lucky with 30 hours a week too. Most can't find jobs but for 15 to 20 a week if they're lucky.

I love it. I'm so grateful. Still on lesser food stamps now cuz of it but god, it feels so good to have income again. I got my self esteem back. I can pay for the majority of groceries now and it's great.
