As an American we are supposed to help those less fortunate. You don't like it leave, it's not gonna stop anytime soon.

ok - bub - don't be sayin' i have no problems w/ this or that i have have problems w/ all gubberment.
the irs started in 1914 after the (non)passage of the 16th and 17th - see devvy.com for the best info.
and in 1913 the treasonous Woodrow Wilson gave up the unfed b.s bank of the u.s to a bunch gold collar criminals - read 'the Creature of Jekyll island' Griffin or Quigly ' hope and tragedy'.

so - yes i do have issues w/ thievery and gold collar criminals - taking from me and mine for their own gluttonous reasons.

If you've never actually been hungry or had to deal with the raw aspects of real life, then you really have no place commenting on something you know nothing of, demeaning and degrading people who are not in as fortunate a situation as you, or come from dangerous and unstable backgrounds. The only family that some have are low-lifes and addicts, and they have nothing of a savings waiting for them or an inheritance to look to or anything of the like. No fortunate family connections to get you a good temporary job out of school, no car still cruising from your sweet 16.

From here you get any job you can, more than likely something minimum wage to start. Now depending on where you're located, minimum wage with the maximum amount of hours they'll give you is still entirely insufficient to support yourself. You can always pick up as many side jobs as possible, but often times, especially in urban areas, these are lacking or the oppurtunity is illegal. The reality is many people who get the small food allowance get it because they need it, and can still barely scrape by. The transition into self sufficiency is not the same story for everbody.

I have a feeling many people complaining about "government handouts" come from the kind of families that give you $1,000 and a trip to Rome just for graduating high school. Or grew up in a family house where they weren't pressed to leave until they were really ready. I'm sure there are a handful of old bitter schlags as well, back from the time when the dollar stretched further and they never needed nothin'. Now you're hot and salty about being crusty and poor, and left with nothing else, bitterly hanging on to your last shred of pride by suffering and complaining about others getting the kind of temporary help you need as well.

Someone who can pay their mortage and fulfill their familys' every need and some of their wants shouldn't be so angry about people who are hungry getting a little bit of help until they have pulled themselves up into a position where they can now make it without it.

Someone who has seen the other side of life not just as a tourist but has had to live amongst it or within it would have gained much more understanding and clarity of life as a broke young man in the slums or as an unwed mother with kids she's struggling to take care of.

There has been much ignorance in the replies to this thread due to a lack of life experience and the privilege of an overall comfort level many aren't even aware of, for they have never known anything else.

Food stamp participation and use doubled during the aftermath of the worst economic meltdown the world has seen since the 1930's? It's not exactly a mystery, right?

Dead wrong. We are using privately owned property and internet connections to expose a serious problem in the American government. And no .. the government isn't too happy about freedom of speech these days.

Here's an idea: move to another country. If you don't like it here, leave.

Here's an idea: (in the spirit of the holiday I self edited out my comment.)

Exactly why you pay such private property tax yes? What about that private internet connection tax you pay?

Hell... even I'm not too happy about "freedom of speech" these days because I have to put up with people like you hating and trashing my own family members because they get food stamps so that my little cousins, nieces, nephews, etc. won't look like they're starving African children walking around barefoot. I guess it would be much better in America if that were the case huh? Starving kids all over the street and parents robbing people left and right for food.

Do yourself a favor and visit Africa with their non-assistance if that's what you want to see happen.

Not to be off topic, but I see people say this a lot or something similar, and all I can think is CREEPY! Why are you watching what other people are doing that closely? If I saw you looking at me like that, I'd think you were trying to memorize my card number. I'd probably ask you what the pup is your problem before I call to cancel my card. A line full of people and you're studying what's in their hands? Best to just mind your own business.

Pure arrogance and assumption on your part.

I love how people are willing to complain at the slightest justification.

Seeing massive failure of the government .. or a massive power grab .. that results in a HUGE population of people requiring food stamps ... that's not a 'slight justification' for complaint. That's major. We have every right to complain about the state the government is in. We have every right to be wary of a government power grab. Only a fool would sit back and think it's all good and wonderful.

You think you have problems? Shut up. Be damn glad for what you have. I'm sick of your whining. Seriously.

Go play elsewhere.

Seeing massive failure in government would be reflected similarly to the massive failure of African countries governments. Yes... lets get rid of welfare altogether and let people die in the streets. Lets turn this country into a slump so that a few wealthy people can eat all they want, and get fatter than they already are while drinking their gallons of beer each month.

This isn't a 'get rid of food stamps' article. It's an article exposing just how many people are on foodstamps. (people don't realize how many in this country need them!!) It's exposing a massive failure on the part of the government which is a cause for so many people to have to use the foodstamps.

Fix the problem with the government.
Then the number of people on foodstamps will go down.

How do you propose the government fix something that is obviously caused by lack of jobs? What is wrong with government that made these jobs disappear leaving this many people in need of help?

I get what you're attempting to say here, I just argue that the government isn't the cause of the problem. Instead it's the business mindset that those in business are learning... to make heavy profit, get rich, and do it at the cheapest expense possible. The business man doesn't want to live like the cop, fireman, teacher, etc. Instead they must flaunt money all around... even at the cost of 2,000 employees jobs.

Government doesn't create jobs. The only fault in the government IMO is letting companies tear down and leave while continuing to trade with those companies. I have a solution... it's entirely extreme and would never take effect, but I'll go ahead and propose one instead of whining about how bad government is even while we're obviously far more fortunate than most other countries.

Solution: Let companies leave America if they want to leave. However if it's an American company setting up shop in Mexico, China, or anywhere else but wanting to continue business/trade with America, tax the hell out of them. If the decide to move back in, give them a tax break on that level. I'm not talking Chinese companies... I'm talking GM, GE, and all those other American companies.

Now with that tax money for leaving the country, give it directly to an American upcoming company of the same sort. Help them set up businesses in other cities and states... employing more people throughout our country. Stop importing the other company's goods... let them sell elsewhere... they're gone and we don't care. build from the inside and let those companies pay for using us.

That's my solution... yes it takes government involvement, is very extreme, and will never happen, but hell, at least I threw an idea out there.

Hopefully you can reload fast because the problem is bigger than you or "your stuff". Nobody is taking anything from you. You think you have something of value that other people suffering seperately from you want to take? With your tough, defender of justice shoot first ask questions later attitude, you will make a great early example of a 21st century dead cowboy in the chance that any type of drastic takeover/revolution does occur.

Helping the less fortunate is one thing. Giving out food stamps to 47 million people is something else entirely. If you can't see that many of those people are taking advantage of the system then God help you in life. What will it take, 80 million on food stamps? 100 million? After 4 more years of economic misery under Obama we just might see it.

I wonder how Wal-Mart and Target, etc., would react to Congress discussing an increase in the minimum wage?

Nice video.

The paycheck does NOT take care of the employee, and as a result, the governement has to chip in to take over where the paycheck is failing.

Business is just to greedy. We need to have greed standards in place to regulate all business, it just sucks.

This I feel is exactly why Obama made the move that he did on health care. After a recent hike in the minimum wage, he no doubt got floods of complaints from people that were letting hime know that this raise did nothing. All that happened was our wages went up, our taxes went up and the cost of living bounced right up with the change within about two weeks.

Obama was smart enough to listen to these compaints and do the next best thing anyone would do, at least get us heatlh care. The cheap @$$ corporations that want to be skimpy will now be required to at least cover the employee with health insurance. Obama was smart enough to learn that a recent attempt to raise the employment wage isn't going to do anything.

The problem with thinking that walmart or target will react to a change in minimum wage, is that they wont. The problem here is that if there is enough of a change in wages, food will also go up, and thus so will rent and everything else. What state assistance pays out in addition to food stamps, will probably have to go up as well, so in essence there is no change, the people with lower wage paying jobs are still getting state support.

Employers refuse to allow thier profit margin to take a loss, even if it means screwing people out of hours and wages. Proft margins are so greedy that the backbone of our country is supported by greed, and to top off the problem, we live in a time where the regulations and laws actually support it.

There are a few select businesses in the country that have nothing to worry about in terms of Obamas new health care, as they have already been paying a decent wage and have already been providing heatlh insurance to their employees.

Here is the way I look at the score with employers right now...
They don't want to pay you a decent wage, but demand that you show up everyday on time for your shift. The idea is that your a very important part of the structure of that business but not important enough that they have to pay a decent wage for, besides there are thousands of people that would love to have your job at any price.
They don't want to pay for unemployment benefits. People opted to strike in a sense, and took advantage of unemployment because it paid better than a part time minimum wage job, so as a result employers cut all hours so that they are now exempt from having to pay into that fund any longer.
Now Obama is going to force health care on them as a result. Turns out, they don't want to pay that either. They don't want you calling in sick to work, but they don't want to pay you enough to where you can afford heatlh care.

Basically what this all boils down to is the employment industry has accepted us as slaves, we work for crap wages, often so bad that our paycheck hardly even covers rent and food, thats a slave in case you never realized it. Change needs to happen, and its to bad but push has come to shove.

Now states are wanting to secede from the union, they are basically saying they want to seperate from the united states that way they can set their own standards as they see fit. In other words they want to take their state and their slaves and treat them as they see fit.

fact : i have worked for 41 years and am continuing to do so. i have put 3 kids through higher ed - no gubberment assistance.
i have not then nor have i now received 1dollar for anything from gubberment.

i have, in fact, fed more kids than (more-n-likely) anyone in my little hamlet.
i'm really all for band aids - i admit i did have an emotional reply - i would not want anyone to go hungry - and all things being perfect - sheltered until they can get back on there feet - hint- temporary is the key.

but most so-called tax dollars do nothing for you and me and seem to feed the beast in the east which sadly includes the 'military industrial complex'.

ask yourselves - why do gubberment types have a deep underground bases to hide in whilst we flounder about.
why do they have their own Social security ' what congress lays upon the people will be layed upon them - yet they are not subject to 'health' care.

anyone thinking that corporations would kick up more tax dollars - results - you and i will ultimately cover these costs.
rich people - they make a good flogging post- well they are rich.

income should not be taxed and is a symbiotic relationship - employee to employer - more of a relationship than an income.

taxes should come from imports and capital gain only.

btw - you can imagine all you want - but - i have taken my own food out to various homeless types and my son has cooked various meals for them.

Well that's the right thing you've done, brought as many into this world as you've been able to provide for. If you have three children who you have put through "higher ed", then you must not be working out of necessity currently, rather for personal enjoyment or luxury desires. It seems that three grateful graduates would want their father, 60+ years of age to finally get some peace and time to himself, if that's what he so wanted.

What does that even mean? "Various homeless types"? Which categorizing system are you using, the one where you group age and ethnic varieties visually or the one that sections hobos aromatically?

On a side note, thank you for bringing food to someone who's hungry. That is the point, after all. X bless.

Amid Tax Talks, a Cry of 'Save My 401(k)!'-

Published: Tuesday, 27 Nov 2012 | 7:45 AM ET

As the debate around tax reform grows more heated, broker-dealers and other companies that service retirement plans offered by employers are increasingly concerned that the tax benefits of 401(k) plans are on the chopping block.

An industry group that normally works behind the scenes, the American Society of Pension Professionals and Actuaries, on Monday launched a media campaign intended to educate U.S. employers and workers that the federal government might consider changing the tax benefits of retirement savings accounts

www.cnbc.com...

see...its not a CT pipe dream..... the socialists & progressives tha t are followers of the globalists are going to finance their hekk-on-earth with the individual capitalists life savings

then they will deny that tax increases affect the middle class to the tune of Federal revenues of ~$85Bn in year 2013 alone

Obama did not create the economic depression, nor would I agree that he is catering to it.

People that qualify for food stamps can't have stocks, bonds, IRA.s or money in savings or bank accounts. Now I guess if people wanted to keep their money over seas just to screw the government for food stamps, I guess that could happen. But honestly how many people are going to go through the trouble. We live in a society where you are basically required to have a bank account and have movement through the account or they close it. If you leave any money in that account, your food stamps are deducted from whats left in there.

In addition, if someone has funds that show up and they are not from you standard employer, you get audited, and I know because it happened to me. My funds however were accountable. Some peoples aren't and they would be banned for 6 months / 1 year / forever.

The reason why we have so many people taking advantage of food stamps is because we have to many people working for crap wages like at walmart. You can work full time at walmart and still qualify for food stamps. So basically our taxes are going to greedy employers like walmart and any other low wage job that jips people.

Congress can't do anything about it because as soon as they do a wage increase, everything else including the cost of food goes up with it, in about two weeks. Thus no increase is even realized. This is exactly why Obama is forcing health insurance, there are to many things that are making us out to be slaves. It's so bad now that a lot of people don't want to work for the starting wage offered, and I agree with them, but how else are we suppose to pay rent?

Thats another sore subject, RENT. It just sucks and they seriously need to do something about that, it's just bankers making profits.

That has got to be one of the most idiotic things I have ever heard and I can not believe so many people apparently agree with you enough to star you.
Following your logic may I suggest your wives and daughters should offer their sexual services to any low life who might desire them as it is preferable to being raped at gun point?
Also, leave your car unlocked with the keys in it to avoid being carjacked at gun point.
If someone had told me about your post rather then my having read it myself I'm not sure I would have believed it. Could there actually be people out there who thought like this?
Let us give away everything we own and worked for to avoid confrontation with those who might want it. Don't bother waiting for the thief to mug you in an alley at gun point, just mail him a percentage of your paycheck each week and save both of you the trouble of actually having to go through the formality of the actual walk down the alley, the traditional 'stick 'em up' etc. etc.
That people could even consider this seems sad to me.
