‘Destroy the idols,’ Egyptian jihadist calls for removal of Sphinx, Pyramids

Murgan Salem al-Gohary, an Islamist leader twice-sentenced under former President Hosni Mubarak for advocating violence, called on Muslims to remove such “idols.”

“All Muslims are charged with applying the teachings of Islam to remove such idols, as we did in Afghanistan when we destroyed the Buddha statues,” he said on Saturday during a television interview on an Egyptian private channel, widely watched by Egyptian and Arab audiences.

“The fundamental Salafis have demanded to cover Pharaonic statues, because they regard them to be idols,” Egyptian author on ancient history Ahmed Osman told Al Arabiya English, explaining that Salafi Muslims follow conservative religious principles which view statues and sculptures as prohibited in Islam.

“But so far the government has done nothing to indicate what is the future of Egyptian antiquities,” adds Osman.

I did read somewhere that the Sphinx's nose is missing due to one Middle Ages Muslim shooting it off, but no one is sure.

Who did the Sphinx's Nose?

I doubt that the Egyptians will destroy the Pyramids or Sphinx in any way. Religious fanatics may now be in power in Egypt but even Islamic fundamentalists need tourist dollars for the less spiritual things in life.

Are you suggesting a belly dancer isn't spiritual to Egyptians or Muslims?

Despite the fact that it's been practiced for thousands of years in the middle east?

I heard Napoleon shot it off with a cannon... It appears to be a myth:

Although popular legend blames Napoleon and his troops during the French campaign in Egypt (1798-1801) for having shot the nose off the Great Sphinx, in fact this story just isn't true. I have yet to locate an original source for this myth. The idea that Napoleon was to blame for the Sphinx's missing nose dates at least to the beginning of the twentieth century.

In 1380 A.D. the Sphinx fell victim to the iconoclastic ardor of a fanatical Muslim ruler, who caused deplorable injuries to the head. Then the figure was used as a target for the guns of the Mamluks." In the book The Egyptian Pyramids: A Comprehensive Illustrated Reference (Jefferson, NC: McFarland, 1990), p.301, the author, J.P. Lepre, adds the fact that, in addition to the 14th century damage, "The face was further disfigured by the eighteenth century A.D. ruler of Egypt, the Marmalukes [Mamluks]."

Reliable source? F&%~ed if I know...

Sorry, what did you say again?

Seriously though, I'd like to see them try and destroy the pyramids... Egypt is in uproar now, imagine if someone tried to destroy their largest icon.

They simply arent realizing how daunting a task that really would turn out to be.

But maybe the govt knows it would take forever, and is using it as mere political fodder.

On a positive note. If they succeed in blowing up just one pyramid, maybe we can see once and for all how they were built. There is a theory I believe but it would be cool just to know for sure.

Disclaimer: I am in no way encouraging the destruction of pyramids.

Murgan Salem al-Gohary should work on building relations with the people, the common folk, with his neighbors, with Christians, with Jews, with humanity, not destroying ancient wonders.

What is is with these nuts who want to eradicate all signs of humanities great achievements and diversity. This man, and all of his supporters need stopping, before they eradicate us. Maybe we should repay them in kind, by destroying the rock the muslims worship in Mecca.

In my opinion its not about destroying idols its building the wall between west and east. Muslim brotherhood does not want any western influence in their areas.

its not about tourism money as tourism in Egypt has allready fall 30% and it doesn´t seems to matter to muslim brotherhood when they want to destroy everything which might bring tourism to their areas. As long as there is civil unrest and muslim brotherhood ruling it doesn´t draw intrest to that area as nobody from unmuslim country feel safe there.

Egypt will become like Pakistan, where no tourists are welcome.

Its very sad if they do that, those monuments are not idols in any means, you don´t see tourists worshipping, praying ancient egyptian gods, there is no fandom for these monuments. We appreaciate the history of the mankind.

Some people who believe in a religion or have a spiritual side of themselves become like angels. Some people who believe in a religion become like demonic bullies and hate everything that is not exactly like them and have other views than them. I wonder who are the true representatives of gods will?

But I cannot care much about the monuments. Humanity as a whole is destroying so much else everyday that is more important than stone heaps in the desert.

You are correct, they are not idols. It always astounds me how certain muslims bang on about idolatry yet they worship their rock in Mecca, which they certainly DO bow down to, even though they claim they do not, and they worship their ever-so-great prophet Mohammed who they put above their own families. Hypocrisy at its finest.

Edit: Maybe they were idols in the past when they were created, but they are merely relics of a bygone era now.

*Liberal Megaphone On*

Their culture is different from ours. Who are you to impose western values on them? There is no right or wrong here. If they choose to disassemble these monuments which are symbols of hierarchical oppression and enslavement, who are you to say they can't? One mans cultural monument is another mans false idol.

Would only empower them more. They are the manipulative haters that are living on fear of the other cultures that is within muslim society. The haters of Islam is fueling the exact people they hate on the other side.

Precisely. Good or bad, they serve as memorials to our history. Nobody has a right to remove them, just because they were created thousands of years before their religion, and their parent religions, even existed.

they can't even cooperate long enough to agree on a government...what makes them think they are gonna get the necessary manpower motivated and collaborative long enough to remove something that's stood for 4600 years?

so called 'islamic leaders' have said many things over the past few years and none of it has happened.

i think the world's response should be 'have at it'...

The Pyramids at Giza isn't a Buddha Statue.
