Yes, you heard right. It seems that

...outgoing Mexican President Felipe Calderon on Thursday sent to the Mexican Congress a piece of legislation to change the country's name...

And you'll probably never guess what he wants the country's name changed to.
CNN

Also, another relevant link, with the important line being the one after "About Mexico"...
Embajada de Mexico

Personally I think the proposed name is boring and overused. Better ones could be found.

That's what it is NOW.

They want to change it officially to Mexico.

Ay Carumba!!

(CNN) -- It's the one fact about Mexico that you probably didn't know. The country's name is not really Mexico, at least not officially. After gaining independence from Spain in 1821, Mexico officially became the "United Mexican States."

..

That's why outgoing Mexican President Felipe Calderon on Thursday sent to the Mexican Congress a piece of legislation to change the country's name officially to simply Mexico.

I cant see why not to change the name, ive traveled through Mexico i cant
even count how many times and never once heard it referred to by its
proper name anyway, it is already Mexico to the rest of the world so
making it official is prudent, albeit not necessary.

It is known both as the United Mexican States, or The United States of Mexico. Bet you didn't know that. The broom was telling someone on some board awhile ago that was Mexico's real name, and they laughed me all the way to Mexico.. I know, I know, bad pun. -.o

Perhaps. Anyway:

Mexico

Mexico (Listeni/ˈmɛksɨkoʊ/; Spanish: México; IPA: [ˈme.xi.ko] ( listen)), officially the United Mexican States[8][9] (Spanish: About this sound Estados Unidos Mexicanos (help·info)),[10][11] and also referred to as the United States of Mexico (Spanish: Estados Unidos de México),[12][13][14] is a federal constitutional republic in North America.
