Kaku does seem to be suceeding in helping to increase awareness of the problems which a severe geomagnetic event would cause. However, it is not as if contingenies are not being considered or put in place. I also think he carries himself as somewhat of a superstar nerd.

Contrary to the implications, the lessons of Fukushima have not been ignored by the NRC.

The NRC staff has determined that continued operation does not pose an imminent risk to public health and safety; however, the additional requirements outlined in this Order are necessary in light of insights gained from the events at Fukushima Dai-ichi. The requirements of this Order are immediately effective and are expected to remain in place until superseded by Order or rule.

The NRC recently considered a petition regarding the widespread and long term loss of electrical power due to geomagnetic events and its effect on nuclear power plants in the US.

The NRC will review and analyze the underlying technical and policy issues relevant to the PRM and the comments submitted in support of the PRM in the NRC rulemaking process, to address the petitioner’s requested rulemaking changes and reliable emergency systems capable to operate for a period of 2 years without human intervention and without offsite fuel resupply.
