Saudi Arabia introduced an electronic tracking system that alerts men by text message when their wife is leaving the country, even if they are traveling together. The system was swiftly condemned by activists and Twitter users. Saudi women – banned in the country from driving, denied the right to travel without their husband’s consent and required to wear a veil from head to toe – are now to be monitored by a new electronic system that tracks cross-border movement, AFP reported. Woman in Saudi Arabia are not allowed to leave the ultraconservative kingdom without the permission of their male ‘guardian,’ or husband, who must give his consent by signing a register known as the ‘yellow sheet’ at the border or airport. Now, husbands will receive a text message to remind them even if they’re traveling outside the country alongside their wife.

Gross. Really gross. I get that there are some places that seem backward, but it's very surprising to me when they keep it in reverse and gun it. I wonder if this is a retaliatory swipe in response to the heat levied at the Saudi 'govt' as of late.

The women and some men have been getting 'uppitty' let's make things more oppressive!

Is this just crazy insecurity? I don't understand this aspect of the culture at all. Fear that the woman will cheat? Fear that she'll disagree? Is it that women are equal to a slave or pet? My dog gets better treatment than a Saudi woman. What gives?

I would much rather have a woman be my equal, a complete pain in my ass, fiesty and outspoken. How boring it must be to have a canary for a wife.

Looks like escape is now futile.

It's too bad the US government protects & legitimises the Saudi government through its support, aid, and advocacy internationally. Because of that the Saudis can do whatever the hell they want, and often do, resulting in disgraceful stuff like this. Typical US foreign policy; support dictatorships left and right so long as they're pro-US.

It's immoral, embarrassing, and I would like it to stop. I know I'm part of the problem what with my oil lust.

well your dog probably gets treated alot better than 90% of the people on the planet, but thats another story.
what makes us so righteous to judge these people, our (the west) system is so perverted and corrupt with lies and deceit, how can we judge the saudi's, coming from our western society, you say you want to give the saudi woman opportunity, to what? Oprah!, the same life as a western woman, give me a break! you think they really want that, its a fallacy something you see on TV. look at the west from another point of view, we are the freeks not them.
your ideals make you sound like a missionary trying to "save the savages from their own wretchedness"

True on both counts.

This isn't an us vs. them thread. This is about basic human decency. A right to Oprah? Sure. I was thinking more along the lines basic human rights. Not being a slave, not forced to wear certain things, allowed to go where they please, say what they please.

you think they really want that

I can't imagine anyone wanting to be treated the way they are. I am certain that is what the women want, they're just too scared (well not all of them) to say it.

look at the west from another point of view, we are the freeks not them.

Those of us actually living in a Western country certainly aren't perfect. I'm FAR from it. I realize we commit atrocious acts, that we have our problems. That being said, a woman should be equal to a man, just as a black man should be equal to a white man.

your ideals make you sound like a missionary trying to "save the savages from their own wretchedness"

The savages can do as they wish. If a woman legitimately wants to be treated like a piece of property, she should be allowed to make that CHOICE. However if a woman wishes to walk outside without a male escort, or drive a car, or do anything a man is allowed to do that is her right as a human being.

Women are not objects. Men don't get to own them.

the days of the west imposing our ideals and beliefs on other cultures and traditions are over, all we have done in the name of "saving people" for the better is stomp all over peoples tradions and destroy cultures all because , well you for one dont find it palatable, well what hapens when you dont find something else palatable will you take that away too.
this is no better than missionary's of the past and this short sighted, arcaic, narrow minded ideal of more than 200 years old sickens me.

Did you even bother to read the post above, this is not a question of imposing
morality that is different on another culture, this is a question of bad morality,
plainly put it is immoral to oppress people, if you actually observe the psychological
issues hat stem from long term oppressive societies you find many many times
something akin to Stockholm syndrome, except that i would say it is far far worse,
as in this example its generational hostages and not short term.

freedom is the basis for life, also it is what causes civilizations to flourish,
oppressive governments will always fail as they eventually oppress things
the people decide they do not like and fall to a revolution or into anarchy.
the US has problems of its own, we have our types of oppression as
well, but to say that because of that its OK to oppress anyone is a bad bad
idea.

and on another note, these people cannot speak out about this, they are being
silenced, if you or i were a women in that country, even if we believed we
deserved equal right we would know to never speak up about this for fear
of retaliation, just look up the oppressive violent responses women rights
movements have faced in any number of countries like this one. so we would
most likely never even know if the majority wanted freedom.

It would seem more and more countries are coming around to the ways of the West, and I certainly don't want to stamp out any culture or tradition unless they encourage making one human less than another.

well you for one dont find it palatable, well what hapens when you dont find something else palatable will you take that away too.

It would depend on what was being introduced to my palette. Someone saying they hate women and believe they are less than men, that's fine. Actually forcing a woman into a slave role? Gladly take it away. Human rights.

How are my feelings on subjugating women short sighted? How are they archaic? My thoughts certainly are not narrow minded and in my country women weren't allowed to vote less than 100 years ago.

All of your points are invalid.

Is it your contention that women are less than men? That they are inferior? Are you getting upset because you think this is about religion? This is about basic human decency/dignity.

Would you say the same thing if this was a story about black people only allowed outside with a male escort and a veil?

Ah no!!! See, it's this type of loathesome, pathetic thing that makes me not quite buy into reincarnation, because why would anyone want to be born into a woman's role in Saudi Arabia, for goodness sakes? (no, don't even suggest self-sacrifice, because this is beyond.)

Being forced to wear a full body cover, and black at that to attract even more heat, in the searing hot sandy country is pure insanity. Then be treated less well than the family goat who can, unlike women, ride in the front seat of cars. And now they're monitored! Maybe the men all suffer from severe repeated heat stroke. /end rant.

But I absolutely agree that this is all about basic human rights, and last time I checked, scientists all agree that women are human.

Hey, could be worse! They could find themselves males in this country who have had to go through divorce because there wife was unfaithful and lost there house, kids and now pay more alimony and child support than they could possibly afford in a backwards economy and face losing there license or jail time for "contempt" IE: debtors prison.

Global morality? Meh, I'm all out of tears for the problems of the whole world, we have enough injustice right here in the ol US of A to keep us crying locally for some time.
