I get a kick out of the lead singers in some bands that sound like the cookie monster.

Well, the Cookie Monster still sometimes shows us how it's originally meant to be done.

Everything else is just a cheap derivative.

It is quite interesting that metal music has been seen as negative by so many religious, and other repressive forces.

Even where the style has been embraced by religious elements, it remains controversial.

Heavy Metal has been on the defensive for decades against critics and those spreading moral panics.

Yet, actual studies have always shown positive findings too:

Much of the research into the emotional and behavioral effects of popular music has focused on heavy metal, though a few studies have also included rock and grunge music. Overall, the popular belief that listening to certain musical styles causes a variety of behavioral problems is not supported. Emotional Response While a number of researchers have associated heavy metal music with depression or anger, these effects do not usually occur when heavy metal is the listener’s musical preference. A study of more than 1,000 gifted students aged 11-18 found that heavy metal music is used for cathartic release and to dissipate negative emotions, particularly among those with low self-esteem (ScienceDaily, 22 March 2007).

suite101.com...

However, rarely will people ever come out say how metal helped them.

Maybe the tide is beginning to turn, and it's time to celebrate metal, rather than just to defend or justify a style of music.

I lived with a dude that couldn't sleep unless he listened to old Metallica first. Different stroke for different folks. I'm an original metal head. Sabbath, et al. I actually find the music soothing. My own angst played before me. Ahhhhhh.....

Oh, BTW, good metal isn't dead. Slipknot is awesome. A few years back they invited a couple of members of Stone Sour to play. The result? 2 excellent bands. Jim and Corry play in both. The original:

Then the SK influence on SS:

ETA: Now that I think about this SS had an influence on SK too. Since Corry and Jim came on SK's music has been???? "Fuller?" Better for sure.

There's something cathartic with a great Napalm Death recording.

Napalm Death - Scum

Part 2

Part 3

Being a gamer and a metal-head, when I can combine these two things, I find it VERY therapeutic. As a result, I give you all this:

Recently this became one of my favorite "therapy" songs, and I also enjoy it as a theme song of the very amusing Blue Mountain State series.

Rev Theory - Hell Yeah.

I've often wondered why certain music affects certain people positively and others negatively. It's vibrations, and our bodies are like 70-something percent water, and if you consider that our emotions are chemical reactions… it seems like music physically affects us.

So why does metal calm some people down while agitating others? I usually hear people talk about how metal has "gotten them through some hard times", meaning that they were already agitated. I'm wondering if the abrasive dissonance in the music actually mirrors the dissonance in the body, harmonizing with it. Like creating a minor chord. Then the harmony would bring peace.

I mostly like the older metal. Obituary, older Metallica (first three albums), Megadeth etc. But I also like some of the newer metal. I'm so stoked for the new Devourment album in February

I am stuck in the late 80's early 90's

My ole'man did some rodie work back in the day, and if you need to know ANYTHING from who was in the band, before and after, he put some stuff on my IPOD. Didin't hear some of the stuff until I actually listened to it.

MOST FAVES: go on youtube to check it out.

Ministry- Just One Fix
(grabs you by the balls and doesn't let you go till the end) Wish I knew??

Alice Cooper: Roses on White Lace
Just the Epotimy of Alice!!!! DAMN GOOD TUNE.

And old Maiden, Metallica, Megadeth, or any hair Metal.
I call it my MEDITATION music.

I just hope the lighter doesn't explode in my hand!!!!!!
