If you have ever watched bond movies you would have seen him. I will not point him out as I think its pretty obvious but was he in the American civil war?

It's not obvious to me, and it seems a little frustrating

I dunno about the James Bond thing but the bloke bottom right looks pretty bloody similar to Bill Pullman....

I think the blusher was something they did with photos back then to give color to b/w pictures. I had to do it in a photography class. You take a b/w photo and use special coloring tools to give the image color.
