norton antivirus slows me down!

i run win xp and when my norton antivirus software (norton) is enabled it slows everything down - watching movies is a no no as is most multimedia - also it seems to slow my browser - all is sorted when i disable it but thats not what i really want to do is it

I use Macafee...But I'm sure Norton has equivalent settings, or preferences..

You can exclude some filetypes from being scanned....Like your video files..
You can determine if inbound, or outbound files are scanned...things like that...

Check your help file and search for "Exclusions"...Good Luck...!

Step One: get a hammer.

Step 3: get a REAL anti-virus program.

Step 4: Hit yourself again and again with the hammer asking yourself "What was I thinking, installing Norton?''

Out of interest... What do you call a REAL anti-virus program?
The programs I use (on multiple platforms) are:

* AVG Anti-Virus
* AntiVir

And I think they are extremely good (and 100% free).

Yeah, its really piece of bloatware.

And when I tried to install Norton Internet Security couple years ago system rebooted always when there should have been login screen.
So I started to safe mode and used system restoration to get rid of it and thanked god that I did restore point before installation.

And what I've seen its user interface is horrible, "user friendly" means only that you can't do any settings. (especially to firewall)

Avast should be also pretty good AV program.

Amen to that. I HAD Norton 2003 and it was ok, but the paying was the worst part. In May of this year, I got AntiVir and I must say it is AWESOME. TOTALLY FREE and barely any viruses.

I heard AVG was also extremely good. If I were you, I'd go with either Anti-Vir or AVG as MetalHead said.

I just use the Resident Scanner that scans all incoming files, and inbetween those files it scans my computer, running in the background right when I start up, barely have to do anything.

I have decieded to get a decent antivirus package as norton does seem a pain for most users....repet after me "norton is evil - throw it away"

why hate norton???

it actualy protects you from viruses even be4 they enter your comp...

anyway i got norton antivirus and internet security 2005 for free (im using my bragging rights now)

Because, as previously explained, it cuts down your computer processing power between 10-50%

Anyone can throw up Kazaa and get it for free. Why you'd want it is an entirely different story...

I have Norton Internet Security 2004. I have no problems with it at all. My computer works well enough, even with it installed. I have never been on the internet without one Norton anti-virus program or another, so I really can't compare.

The bottom line is my computer is protected. I run the software at night, while I'm sleeping and download the nearly daily updates at some time before bedtime. I let Live Update do the rest.

Scans are slow, but why should I care? I'm asleep.

Technically, you are not protected at all. But at least you're doing more than some people

While I agree that any Norton home edition sucks donkey balls, I think that people who can easily get their hand on softwares (that is, without paying them ) should consider checking out the corporate version of Symantec Antivirus. It's really working nicely, takes WAY less ressource than the other edition, does almost everything in the background, etc etc...

Really cool. Of course, it must probably be way more expansive than the other version, but why should I care about that?

Also, I've heard that today with programs like PrevX (anti-spyware/adware/virus software, that prevent their very execution, real-time monitoring, etc..) you barely need another anti-virus (exclusivly) software to keep your machine protected.

Kicking butt of any uninvited traffic is HW firewall's job, if they're stopped by anti-virus software they have already come through your yard and are now knocking on your door.
Remeber that multilayered defense is basic rule of warfare.
