Soooo...your adding programs that aren't considered "welfare".
Again, this is a redefinition.

You honestly believe that practically 2 in 3 Americans is on welfare?

No. It's closer to 1 in 7. Again you'd have to include a sweeping number of all beneficiaries just to get close to the 110 million number recently given by the the Republican staff of the Senate Budget Committee which doesn't even agree with your own estimation of the number of Americans on welfare. More than 200 million is just plain wrong.

Medicare, Social Security, and Medicaid aren't welfare programs.

Welfare is income directly from the U.S. Dept. of Health and Human Services through programs like SNAP (food stamps) and TANF. The number of Americans on traditional welfare programs is around 4-7% or around 30 million (give or take). Those are the people that are claimed to get the 'free handouts' like the silly guy in this video.

The number of people getting some form of assistance from the government is only 5% higher than it was under Bush according to the Census Bureau.

44% under Bush
49% under Obama.

5% difference.

That's people receiving ANY form of government assistance or check.
It's grown sadly...but not by that much. Not enough to go into full panic mode.

You are erroneously lumping everything under the umbrella of "welfare".
It's not all "welfare" and the 200 million number you gave are extremely bloated even by Conservative standards.

New lie: The government spends more on welfare than everything else!
Senate Republicans redefine "welfare" to make it sound very expensive

In the context of political discussions, “welfare” traditionally (as in pretty much always) refers specifically to Temporary Assistance for Needy Families, or TANF, the federal program that was created in 1996 to replace the Aid to Families With Dependent Children program — also known as “welfare” — that had existed since the New Deal. This is what people refer to when they say “welfare caseloads” and “welfare rolls,” and when conservatives accuse Obama of gutting “welfare reform” they are referring to TANF. The federal government spends $16.5 billion a year on TANF and, combined, the states spend another $10 billion.

Most of the federal budget is “defense” and war spending and Medicare, which should be common knowledge but that fact is regularly obscured by right-wingers who claim to be deficit hawks but refuse to cut defense spending and are scared of proposing real reductions to our programs for old people. This is how you get poll results where people think most of what the federal government spends money on is “foreign aid” and public broadcasting.

So this is obviously just an attempt to rebrand “everything else” as “welfare.” Salon.com

Look how hard you have to work just to get to 100 million on welfare.
