So this is bad, but someone getting a job over another based on race is OK? This is just affirmative action in the school system. Test standards should be the same across the board regardless of race/nationality, and parents should be held accountable for their kids, along with teachers.

I don't see any racism in this move. It looks pretty even handed to me. The figures are no doubt based on past performance and not really linked to intelligence. The numbers reflect our society as a whole and family values more than intelligence. The Asian community is pretty much fanatical when it comes to education. Their families push their children hard while white/black families generally buy them x-boxes to keep them happy. School is more about socializing than education to a huge part of our children.

Racism is racism. The very term "reverse racism" is a racist concept, implying that only white people can be racist.

So after Virginians graduate they are now presented with a new career path initiative that they can sign up for when graduating.

The choices of class are,

1. Welfare line

2. Unemployment line

3. Military

4. Suicide

Huh? In what way is blatant racial discrimination comparable to affirmative action?

Unequal standards end when large geographic regions of the country get over their seemingly endemic racism.

Affirmative action ISN'T "racism". It's LAW ENFORCEMENT because certain regressive elements of our society simply refuse to abide by the Constitution.

This is priceless...just another way for the educational component to not keep kids behind...they were passing them anyway now they can rely on this...just what our colleges need...more dumb kids going through which makes all the more reason to say that a college diploma isn't worth the paper it's written on...what a joke but hey...this is the way a good portion of the country feels....I would find it insulting as a minority to say that we expect less of you so hear you go dummy....we know you can't do better...

How about leaning on the parents and the educators to get the kids where they need to be rather than admitting defeat...in other words these minority groups just can't keep up with the white kids so where going to make their finish line stop here...the white kids are another 150 feet ahead...way to divide the country even more..I think it's really funny that people will think that this is going to help the country...and we wonder why the other countries laugh at us...we should apply the same logic to the Boston Marathon just to let a white person catch up...but that would be foolish...

I don't see anything peculiar with it.. I mean, I disagree with it, but it's not surprising or anything. The problem stems from the institutionalization of urban African Americans and Latinos, and the criminalization of drugs.

You're just going to end up with more kids failing if you standardize the bar for everyone. It's not because blacks and latinos are more stupid than whites and asians, its the aforementioned institutionalization that has been set in place since the early 80s, as well as the criminalization of drugs. Because of these, you have many people who actually WANT to go to prison to become more involved in a certain gang, you get a culture of people that doesn't care about education and just wants to gangbang and make money from trading drugs because of the institutionalized environment they grew up in.

Actually, this is not affirmative action but more like a state trying to keep their base scores up for federal funding reasons.....

If I were Asian, and they set 82% as the passing rate simply because I was Asian, I wouldn't go to that school anymore.

The truth can never hurt. The move could actually piss enough people off to push their kids to do better. I am all for education reform. There is not enough hard drive space to explain everything wrong with our system here. It is glaringly obvious that this is not racist in any way though. How anyone could take it as racist i can not fathom. Facts are facts, the only ones taking it as racist are racists.

Last I knew the law it was illegal to discriminate based on race. Looks to me like the Black children are being told they aren't as Smart as the Asians and White children so they don't need to feel bad when they score lower, as (obviously) is expected of them. meanwhile, the White and Asian children hear it as, they have to work harder and longer to achieve the same grade as the Black children.

Isn't this a hell of a lot easier when we just STOP making regulations and rules with consideration to race EITHER direction?? I agree with the OP. I'd be furious to be told I was born dumber because of my skin pigment so I needn't bother myself about never measuring up to the other kids.
How Evil. They're being trained as victims from the earliest age.

Right in compliance with World Socialist ideals isn't it. Are they trying to redistribute intelligence in addition to wealth?

More grading on a curve stuff looks like.

Here's what the Virginia state board of education actually did. It looked at students' test scores in reading and math and then proposed new passing rates. In math it set an acceptable passing rate at 82 percent for Asian students, 68 percent for whites, 52 percent for Latinos, 45 percent for blacks and 33 percent for kids with disabilities.

And what do they plan on doing for mixed races?

If a child is half Asian and half Black? Do the set a passing grade around 60ish %?

What a silly concept. I'd be so pissed if I was Black, and someone was telling me my brain was inferior to other races.

Didn't some half Black dude make it into the Whitehouse in recent years?

^^^^Exactly! Schools can opt out of No Child Left Behind; they just don't get the federal funding. It's actually pretty smart if you think more money equals better education. This is Virginia trying to play both sides of the fence.

Another point, i don't get all the racist remarks over this. Do people really believe everybody is equally smart? People have no problem admitting that some are better athletes than others or better artists etc... So why can't people understand that some people may be smarter than others?
