An explosion at an Addison Walgreens, apparently caused by a break in a natural gas line behind the store Wednesday, injured three firefighters and shut down the area for several hours while crews battled the blaze and tried to contain the leak.

A private construction crew working on a street lamp behind the store at Lake Street and Addison Road apparently hit a 4-inch gas main around 11:30 a.m., officials said.

The manager of the Walgreens evacuated the store immediately. At 12:57 pm the store exploded. The store manager and pharmacist, who had gone to turn off the electricity, were inside the buidling when the blast occured but got out safely.

It is not currently know what caused the fire but an investigation, which could take weeks, has begun.
