Israel is doing the only thing it is morally obliged to do - defending its citizens by eliminating the source of recent hostilities escalation. Any talk about whether Israel is right or wrong is moot - there is no righteousness in politics. It doesn't matter what the history of Israel/Palestine is, or what the religion is - place any other nation/people in place of Israel - and their actions to respond to hostilities would be warranted just as well.

Some people seem to sympathize with Hamas and think that by doing so they are sympathizing with Palestinians. That is simply not true. Hamas' intentions were never to achieve peace or Palestinian statehood - it is a purely militant organization that is rooted in conflict and war. There can be no talk of peace or statehood with them in control, and with them holding the Palestinians hostage. In fact the Palestinian Authority (Fatah) in West Bank is likely silently supporting the targeting of Hamas militants, since Hamas is just as much of an enemy to them. The fact that Hamas continues to prosper in Gaza, hurts Palestinians more than anyone else, certainly more than Israel.

Regardless of whether you support Israel or the Palestinian cause, there is little reason to oppose elimination of Hamas. The very reason Hamas was initially created is to derail the process of negotiating a creation of a Palestinian state by the more moderate factions on both sides of the conflict. Hamas is actually on its way out, and is losing support abroad. They are igniting fights with Israel right now in order to seek out sponsors in certain Muslim countries, in hopes that they can get the financing necessary to stay in power. Their only hope right now is Iran and certain factions in Egypt. What Israel did during Cast Lead and is doing now has actually been relatively successful. The final push to eliminate Hamas would have to be by Fatah however. The question is whether Israel is ready for post-Hamas Gaza and the expedited statehood negotiations that might follow if the Palestinian Authority can consolidate control.

I am amazed by hardly surprised by the number of people who are so vehement and vocal about this conflict, and yet care very little to understand the political and social structure in Israel, Gaza, and West Bank.

Perceptions are an individual thing. In mine, it appeared the car was destroyed by a car bomb.
That must have been others too, because the newsreader felt it necessary to keep stating this was done
by an airstrike not a car bomb!

I suppose the subliminal messaging is that "terrorist" use car bombs. Targetted killings are performed by the
"good guys" from the sterile safety of drones, these days.

It's a distinction without a difference to the dead folk in the car however.

Yeah what does stealing land have to do with Hamas being mad with Israel for?

Also,

Your title is wrong.

Israel "Opened the Gates of Hell" not Hamas.

This is just another Israel ass kissing session.

Why don't all the Nutenyahoo lovers join him in killing all the people they displaced. I hear they got dirt pancakes and some mud water. Sounds like they are real trouble. Maybe you could go by the holy place and pray before you murder more innocents for your God?

Just a thought.

There is no way Bush planned 9/11. He's too stupid to plan something that sophisticated.

It was MOSSAD all the way. Just like the USS liberty.

I agree Bush was not the brightest in front of the camera because he knew that he was voted in by a dumb population of voters. That said, he had someone else do his work...that made him smart.

Man that was a tremendously accurate hit on the Hammas leader . It was especially nice of the Israelies not to have used a 1000 pound bomb . There would have a FEW more killed .

The Jews are a peculiar people: Things permitted to other nations are forbidden to the Jews.

Other nations drive out thousands, even millions of people, and there is no refugee problem. Russia did it. Poland and Czechoslovakia did it.Turkey threw out a million Greeks and Algeria a million Frenchmen. Indonesia threw out heaven knows how many Chinese--and no one says a word about refugees.

But in the case of Israel, the displaced Arabs have become eternal refugees. Everyone insists that Israel must take back every single Arab. Arnold Toynbee calls the displacement of the Arabs an atrocity greater than any committed by the Nazis. Other nations when victorious on the battlefield dictate peace terms. But when Israel is victorious it must sue for peace.

Everyone expects the Jews to be the only real Christians in this world. - Eric_Hoffer

Hamas is under way!

Did some reading on UN website on the Israeli-Palestine conflict since the year 2000, just thought i would present the following for some perspective.

sraeli-Palestinian Fatalities Since 2000 - Key Trends*
Introduction
Since the beginning of the second intifada in September 2000 until the end of July 2007, at least 5,848 people have been killed either directly or as an indirect consequence of the Israeli-Palestinian conflict. 1/ This figure includes all persons regardless of their ethnic origin, nationality, gender, age, status as civilian or combatant and regardless of the circumstances or cause.

The way i see it, that is 5,848 to many people that had to die.

1) Deaths from the Israeli-Palestinian Conflict

Of those killed in the conflict, 4,228 have been Palestinians, 1,024 Israelis, and 63 foreign citizens. For every person killed, approximately seven were also injured. 3/

As shown in Graph I,the total number of Israelis, both civilians and Israeli Defence Force (IDF) combatants, killed by Palestinian armed groups and individuals, is declining.

In contrast the total number of Palestinians, both civilians and combatants killed by the Israeli security forces or Israeli individuals, remains relatively high. In 2007, for example, for every one Israeli death there were 25 Palestinian deaths compared to 2002 when the ratio was 1:2.5.

For every 1 Israeli death, there was 25 Palestinian wow

Hmm trends can tell us a lot and help us project the future. Here is the chart.

Look at this chart we can see an overall trend of a decrease in the amount of deaths associated with this conflict, however with the recent events we may see levels return to what they were back in the early 2000's.

Edit to post the conclusions of this UN study:

Conclusion

The right to life in both times of peace and war is protected and regulated in a number of international legal instruments.19/ The State of Israel is a party to most of those major instruments. As the Occupying Power Israel is also under a legal obligation to ensure that the provisions of those treaties, including protection and the right to life, is applied without discrimination to all those under its jurisdiction, including Palestinians in the occupied Palestinian territory. 20/

The Palestinian Authority, although not a sovereign State, has signalled its intention to abide by the Geneva Conventions, while the Palestinian Basic Law, which is a constitutive document, also stresses the importance of human rights. 21/ In addition, the State of Israel and the PLO pledged to respect human rights law in the Oslo Accords which both parties signed in 1994. 22/

To date few persons have been prosecuted for the deaths of civilians, including children, in either Israel or the oPt. 23/ When the right to life has been violated, State parties are under an obligation, according to both human rights and international humanitarian law, to investigate deaths in a prompt, impartial and thorough manner. Perpetrators must be brought to justice and where guilty an effective penal sanction must be imposed and victims afforded redress.

Accountability is essential not just in protecting the rights of victims and preventing a culture of impunity, in which further violations occur, but also to ensure the discipline, efficiency and integrity of State agents. The lack of investigations and prosecutions over killings, particularly children, suggest a lack of accountability by all parties. Greater compliance with the legal standards protecting the right to life is essential to protect the lives of all civilians in the region.

Use this information as you will.

It it downright invidious that Israel has to deal with condemnation when they make every conscious effort, as any military would which is under the microscope, in minimizing civilian casualties and trying to bring to and this situation which has Israeli's understandably anxious and paranoid for their lives.

THEY are the victims. HAMAS is guilty. And the people of Gaza which is being brainwashed by this regime is probably the worst victim of all.

Are you crazy? How many palestinians were killed last time in relation to israelis? I think the ratio was 200:1...

I mean really wtf are you talking about

And how can israel be in peace with palestine with those massive walls all over the israeli-palestine border?

Why not sit down with the plo or hamas and work out a long term permament solution? If they refuse then take it to the international court in the hague or make it an issue in the united nations. Surely there must be better ways to solve a problem than dropping phospherous bombs from airplanes and killing thousands, right?

I think that all the non crazy people left that part of the world a long time ago. All that are left are nutjobs, hence the situation. We should just start domestic oil production to replace what we get from there and let them blow each other to kingdom come. Its what they want and they wont be happy until they do it.

I find this worrying as well, especially if this escalates and spreads beyond Israel and Palestine. How far will the US go to honor its tenuous commitment with Israel?

Well thankfully,Obama seems to be distancing himself from direct US involvement ,however,in the unlikely event that Syria,Iran and Egypt join the party that may well change,It may be plausible that Israel,to solve the Hamas problem once and for all, may decide to hit them with tactical nukes. In that scenario Netanyahu should get his wish for an all out war.

Twitter is indeed a powerful tool for news.

For those that like to monitor multiple twitter feeds at once, the site twitpipe lets you monitor 3 distinct hashtags.

For instance, durring Hurricane Sandy, I had NYC, Brooklyn, and NewYork running in real time. I'm not sure how well it runs on mobile devices.

In war-torn areas where cell service is spotty, a "tweet" only needs a fraction of service compared to a voice call. This is why txt messages at large events seem to work better than cell phone calls. As long as your phone with data has a signal, you can send out your 140 characters.

I'll respond to all the "anti-semite" garbage later.
