Here we go again. Just when things are quiet, more prisoners are released. On one side they collect the financial aid from US and on the other hand release supposedly 'low to mid level' taliban prisoners. Sometimes I wonder if the game is to maintain the presence in Afghanistan despite the promised pull out by 2014? or to simply drive the US out of afghanistan just the way the Russians were. 4

ISLAMABAD (AP) — Pakistan freed at least seven Taliban prisoners Wednesday at the request of the Afghan government, in a move meant to help jumpstart a shaky peace process with the militant group in neighboring Afghanistan, officials said.

The release of the prisoners — described as mid- and low-level fighters — is the most encouraging sign yet that Islamabad may be willing to play a constructive role in peace efforts that have made little headway since they began some four years ago, hobbled by distrust among the major players involved, including the United States.

Makes sense, the US cant hit them with a drone strike when safe in Pakistan's custody...

However

"I am sure the released Taliban can play some part in making the peace process a success," he said.

If these released indviduals were in fact low level fighters, what makes the Pakistan government think they would be able to influence any change or spread a message of better relations...

My guess, assuming they are targeted by a US strike, will they will return to their homes and their lives and be gone in the wind as it were.

Seven prisoners doesnt sound like threatening either countrys security much......and could be a well timed kick start to future negotiations....
Well have to wait to see what the reactions of the protagonists may be.....certainly not a huge war ending gesture by any means....its a start.
