BEIJING (AFP) - Nearly 100,000 people have been killed in China in traffic, work-related and other accidents in the first nine months of the year,
according to official figures.
A total of 98,809 people were killed from January to September -- the equivalent of 11 fatalities every hour -- again underlining China's status as
having one of the world's poorest safety records.
The death toll, however, marked a 0.25 percent decrease -- or 245 fewer fatalities -- compared to the same period last year, according to the
statistics released by the State Administration of Work Safety.
Most of the deaths occurred on the roads, with 77,664 fatalities from traffic accidents -- a 2.3 percent increase -- or 1,772 deaths -- from the same
period last year.

These statistics make China one of the worst safety records in the world. As bad as the numbers seem this actually is less than the previous year
(0.25%). The majority of the fatalities were in traffic accidents, with railway accidents a distant second. Chinese officials say the trend is
improving, but more work clearly needs to be done.
