FEMA, the federal agency who’s responsible for responding to natural disasters and emergencies, apparently can’t figure out how to respond to anything. Over a week after Hurricane Sandy hit the East Coast, the agency is still having trouble providing basic emergency supplies and shelter to the affected area. And now to add insult to injury, FEMA has actually had to shut down emergency relief shelters due to a snow storm that just hit the area.

Sounds like the FEMA camps in NY are cracking down on what information is getting out... "chaos & deaths" used to describe the scene!??. Not sure if this all bogus but worth a look...

Even if there is the smallest amount of truth to this, its a perfect example of why everyone should try to be as self reliant as possible.

Have store-able food, water, cash, silver, rechargeable radios/flashlights, guns + ammo.

And now gas.

Storm coming? Fill your car's gas tanks and have at-least 20 extra gallons.

I just read stories on 2 different sites saying the same things, I wander if they are just fear porn, or really telling folks what they can and cant talk about. Because fear porn is expected, telling folks the arent allowed to tell the press or family and friends that your doing a crap job of it does not fl in America very well.

I also saw reports of them not letting folks charge their phones, and shutting off the wifi to silence them, I will be back to comment further after I find a credible source.

I agree with you, But with Obama's Free Phones, Free Foot Stamps ect ect.. this would seem impossible to see the people on free things be self reliant without government

From the link in the op.

According to the Asbury Park Press, those that have managed to find open shelters are living in conditions that are worse than what they left. Many of them have been shuttled to FEMA shelters that are nothing more than large tents that have no electricity, no running water, no heat, and barely enough supplies for those living in the shelters

When residents of FEMA’s tent city tried to call out and inform the media, officials tried to stop them from taking pictures, turned off the WiFi and stopped allowing people to charge their smart phones.

offgridsurvival.com...

I couldn't find the story anywhere else but this would not be the first time this has happened.

The Federal Emergency Management Agency had a policy prohibiting journalists from having unsupervised interviews with Hurricane Katrina victims who have been relocated to FEMA trailer parks—a policy that was reversed after complaints from the Baton Rouge Advocate and FAIR activists.

FEMA camps in NY? Where in NY? I've heard of no such news and I live in NY. Apparently there are FEMA camps in NJ.

FEMA camps house struggling Sandy survivors in N.J.

www.cbsnews.com...

The FEMA shelter camp in Oceanport, New Jersey looks like a mini-city. The 40 acres of emergency housing is located in the parking lot of a race track. It's part of the agency's response, along with mobile homes on the way now to areas devastated by Sandy.

FEMA's Gene Romano walked through the camp, complete with hot meals and hot showers. It was build for utility workers a week ago. It now houses 4,000 utility workers, first responders and other people in large heated tends.

"These guys are from Canada," Romano pointed out. "We're processing other people over there."

Two hundred storm victims also live here now. More show up every day.

The "Authorities",probably can't get around a whole lot more easily that the residents of the area can.

If I was a FEMA dude, and understood what a bunch of whiners american's tend to be,I wouldn't let the media into some areas either, for fear they might run into a particularly whiney american.

Just sayin',from my own personal experience, first hand, the majority of americans are whiners, bigtime.

I would keep the media away so they didn't spin random wimpering into something other than displaced whiners.

Or should I say.........

Nevermind,Anyway........

Maybe FEMA has spent too much time training to incarcerate the people in their camps and too much money on all those bullets they just bought.

Forgot to think about what their original job was supposed to look like?

What a waste of taxpayer funds.

Why does that statement make no sense to me?

If this is true then who are the idiots working for FEMA? It must be deliberate, how is it possible that there are so many incompetent people working for the same agency?

The following is my opinion as a member participating in this discussion.

From personal experience with these situations...

In 2004 (if I recall correctly), one of the four hurricanes that hit Florida went through Sarasota. It destroyed a trailer park, and there was a number of casualties. Rumors started on the net that they were covering up the “real” death tolls, and listing folks as “missing” rather then “dead” so insurance companies would not have to pay out. There were rumors of refrigerated trucks filled with dead bodies.

Several of my friends were local sheriffs, and had to go down there to work. I asked them to look into the truth of this for me...

Were there trucks full of dead bodies? Yes...
But they were not from the storm. What they ended up being was bodies from morgues, funeral homes, people who had just died in the hospitals of natural causes, or even in accidents. None of them had to do with the storm, and there was no truth to the “cover-up” of the death toll. Simply a matter of people not understanding what they were seeing, and reporting about stuff they didn't understand.

Were people being kept out of certain areas? Again yes...
But again not because of a cover-up. They don't need to have “spectators” to accident scenes, or disaster situations. Besides being dangerous, people also will also tend to loot. Well meaning folks will often cause more issues then they actually help, as we saw with the supposed “FEMA camps” after Katrina. Churches and organizations wanting to bring in “questionable” food stuffs, clothing etc...

I am sure that no one in the “FEMA' camps is being held against their will, and they can leave when they want. People though will always have a “gripe” about something when they feel they are out of control of their elements. Its a way to try and regain an aspect of “control”. We see this a lot in the medical field, when people get sick, and then drive the staff nuts trying to “control their environment”.

My point is to take these stories with a grain of salt until there is actual proof from a reliable source.

I believe your logic is sound.

I believe ,believeing anything on the internet is illogical without first hand knowledge,or at least research.

I believe nothing, until it bites a great big pound of flesh outta my buttock.

well, maybe it doesn't take that much....

The following is my opinion as a member participating in this discussion.

Here are some indicators as to what the real story is vs what your going to hear from civilians there:

No media is allowed inside the fenced complex, which houses operations for JCP&L’s army of workers from out of the area. The FEMA website indicated on Monday that there had been a shelter for first responders, utility and construction workers to take a break, although the compound now contains a full-time shelter operated by the state Department of Human Services.

So the workers, who are used to being in disaster camps, are housed in the same conditions.

Funny how none of them are coming out complaining to the press.
That is your first indicator that your hearing the story of those who are simply not used to the inconvenience of being in a disaster shelter vs those who have been in them before.

There were Blackhawk helicopters flying over all day and night. They have heavy equipment moving past the tents all night.”

Of course they will, its the operations center for disaster relief.
I guess they are just supposed to stop rescuing folks from 9:00 pm till 9:00 am so the residents can get a good nights sleep?

Sotelo scrolls through the photos he took inside the facility as his wife, Renee, huddles for warmth inside a late-model Toyota Corolla stuffed with possessions, having to drive out through the snow and slush to tell their story.

He drove out to “tell his story” so he's not being held prisoner.
If he hates it that much, go to a hotel, family members house, or otherwise.
These are temporary shelters until you can find other shelter, not the government providing you with free housing until you can have a new house built.

officials tried to stop them from taking pictures, turned off the WiFi and said they couldn’t charge their smart phones because there wasn’t enough power.

I suspect another side to this story...

Every time we plugged in an iPhone or something, the cops would come and unplug them. Yet when they moved us in they laid out cable on the table and the electricians told us they were setting up charging stations. But suddenly there wasn’t enough power.”

Isn't the whole area having power issues right now?
Isn't the whole area rationing gas?
If they are running on generators, and there is gas rationing, then you don't want folks using up your power to make unnecessary cell phone calls and other “conveniences”.
Of course folks consider their conveniences to be rights, and often don't understand the reality of survival situations. Sort of like my Ex lugging a hairdryer on a camping trip. To her it was a necessity that she could not live without, she never thought about the fact that there was no place to plug it in.

The same applies to WiFi...
For all we know they were jamming up the ports, eating up the bandwidth, and interfering with the operations that the WiFi was originally intended for. Most likely its there for the staff to be able to remotely use communication and computer systems, not for people to be making unneeded complaints to the press, playing online games, etc...

Many of the same issues even apply in other medical facilities, or places where you have to make folks compromise their comfort for one reason or other. For example, lets say I have one patient that wants the AC at 60 and one that wants it at 80. I have one control, and my medical equipment generates heat that requires it to be cooler. So one is going to be unhappy, and its normally going to be the one who wants it hot. You have to compromise between the group, and not everyone is going to be happy with the end results. Someone will always have a gripe. That gripe may seem legitimate to them, but in the bigger picture its just not...

Also why don't they let people bring in food, clothing etc?
Lets give you an example.
Granny, from church group A over here, decides that she is going to bake cookies for the refugees. She makes her favorite recipe which uses peanut oil in them. Unannounced to her there is someone in that group that has a peanut allergy. Now they have a refugee who is suddenly in anaphylactic shock, and dies, simply because they let someone bring in uncontrolled foodstuffs.

The following is my opinion as a member participating in this discussion.

What's to cover up?
They are free to leave when they wish.
They are free to seek outside help.
They are free to go stay elsewhere.
They are free to go to a doctors office if they are sick.

Its not a matter of trusting the government, its simply a matter of knowing first hand how this stuff plays out more often then not.

The thing is that people want to rely on the government for things that its not the governments job to provide. Then bitch when things aren't to their liking. Its a evacuation shelter in a disaster area, which is there to provide immediate emergency relief to as many as possible as quickly as possible, its not going to provide you with all the comforts that you would get at a hotel.

Go work in a field like medicine for awhile, and you'll fast figure out that if there is one thing that people like to do when they lose control of their circumstances, its bitch about what they feel they have a right to control.

Let me give you another example.
You go to a hospital cafeteria, and you order breakfast.
The food usually sort of sucks in most hospitals, but you don't bitch because you CHOSE to eat there. A patient that is not given a CHOICE as to whether or not they want to eat that crummy food, is going to bitch about their treatment. In their minds, despite the fact that its the same food that many visitors and staff eat, because its FORCED on them, they have a right to gripe about it.

Understand?

The video is a compilation of news reports that I saw develop over a period of days right after the storm. Some people are surprised when they have to go a few days without "services" and clean up on their own. I'd hate it too. That poor woman who's walls will have to be torn out again because of water damage mad me sad. I felt her pain. There must be a lot of people in the region who can't afford the insurance to get it done for them. They are stuck with moldy soggy stuff and living conditions for now. Awful.

I'll take West Coast dry earthquake country over this repetitive destruction by water any day.

I wonder if we can turn FEMA in to the FBI/DHS as a terrorist training organization then?

Build a Kit
Basic Disaster Supplies Kit
A basic emergency supply kit could include the following recommended items:
Water, one gallon of water per person per day for at least three days, for drinking and sanitation
Food, at least a three-day supply of non-perishable food
Battery-powered or hand crank radio and a NOAA Weather Radio with tone alert and extra batteries for both
Flashlight and extra batteries
First aid kit
Whistle to signal for help
Dust mask to help filter contaminated air and plastic sheeting and duct tape to shelter-in-place
Moist towelettes, garbage bags and plastic ties for personal sanitation
Wrench or pliers to turn off utilities
Manual can opener for food
Local maps
Cell phone with chargers, inverter or solar charger
