What a gorgeous cloud. And that energy is an amazing spectacle. Lucky those who where there to see it.

Great Photo!

That could have done a lot of damage if pointed in the right direction.

And saying that, why are there so many small boats sitting out on the water with clouds like that overhead?

Peace

Wow, look at how thick that bolt is!!
It had better be the real deal, because this is an awesome, amazing photo of nature's raw power and I'll be SO pissed if it's a 'shopped picture.

Looks like these pics, and 8 more, are from a calendar produced by the Australian Weather Bureau. More pics and some accompanying background stories here.

Could you just imagine what we could do if we could actually harness that power

That picture is truly remarkable. The energy, the colours, the atmosphere and the wrath of nature can be felt just by looking at it! It's like a divine being has crashed, with brazen fury, into our world and wrecked havoc into the skies.

Haha gotta love the comments below the pic,

Lightning photos are great.
Here's some I took a few years back, also Melbourne, Australia.

Timing is everything. Having the camera setup (on tripod) before the storm gets to you is very important. You dont want to get rained on, and its also best if you get the storm as it approaches so you dont shoot at it behind a wall of rain.
Not too far away, and not too close.

Point the camera where you think the most lightning is, make a completely wild guess at the fstop, open the shutter for a minute or so and hope for the best. Too much light and the shot is washed out, too little and its unusably dark. Too short, you dont get many lightning bolts, too long and the clouds are blurry.

And in Perth there is only ever One weak bolt in the most drastic of Storms. Can't complain considering that's potentially prolonging my life
GIMME LIGHTNING BOLTS!

great photo, if that came down anywhere near me i would have needed a pants change, and if i was on a yacht, changing them twice probably would have been needed.
