I'm with you. Perhaps more people who have seen both sides should see their way to contributing to an understanding.
I grew up in a liberal family, have a liberal arts degree (ATH) from a mixed college. I was always self-sufficient, but lended help to liberal causes, such as the rain forest, recycling, tribal issues, etc..
I was beggared into libertarianism. It got to the point that so many people were asking for so much, I literally could not give more. I was charitably giving myself into poverty. A chairman from one organization would see the work I did for another org, and would approach me for the same treatment. This was constant. I was perpetually involved in giving my life over to causes, some I didn't agree with, but it was a 'good' cause all the same
I began avoiding human contact as much as possible. People seemed to only talk to me when they had their palm up and out, asking for something. What was galling, is that many times, these were things they can very well do themselves.
I took a break. At first it was just a two month break, then it became a year, so that I could recoup my losses. I worked a lot of extra jobs, and learned the true value of money. I had to help myself before I could help other people. I had to get on my feet before I became one of the people I before helped.
Now I am in a position where I can be charitable again, but I will never allow myself to set on by a pack of rapid charitable people. I teach them how to do it themselves.. If they have within them to work as I did for their organizations, good. If not, well the organization does with less.

I think it's good for each of us to explain how we came across our philosophies. I do believe that both sides of the aisle honestly want what's best for our country, we just have different definitions of what is best.

Well it seems that ATS has the most intelligent people on earth, but even these people can agree on most anything. So my question is if the most intelligent people on earth can't find away to get along with each other how to you expect republicans and democrats.

As long as we fight with each other we are all losers while The so called power that be sit back with their pop corn enjoying the show. Wake up people we are all the same. Just being played.

Love it! Star and flag. I come here and all I see are these negative slurs and threads started to inflame some kind of a riot or revolt when what I desired to happen, happened. Why can't they see that? Why don't they accept that? I struggle mightily with these questions..... Fleetingly to be truer.

I try not to comment.

It is like a glutton at the table to have all you want and then sit still and demand more but I'll tell you - I see this is a strategy of the Banking and Industrial Owned GOP and one which has served them well over the course of recent history. We just want what's ours and stop when we get it but I think perhaps the anti-industrial, "people for people" parties should fight that same way too. Take all the yardage you can while your opponent is laying by the sidelines - stunned.

Geez, for a site that's supposed to be full of the "best and brightest" minds on the internet, I see nothing more than plenty of anti-liberal trolling.

There are some decent conservatives on ATS. Some of them even came to a finding jesus moment after the election and are analysing the social issues the right is toting with a skeptical eye.

Of course their principled stance on fiscal issues remains..and good. that is the balance the system needs. We need a side of the aisle telling the left to calm down and lets look at the wallet before spending on more programs...sadly they forgot this message (like 30 years ago really) and focused almost exclusively on social anchors than fiscal wings.

In saying that, some of the more frothing at the mouth tools are now even more culture warrior entrenched, and are now going absolutely nuts (you see the threads).

To those ones..the ones screaming hatred for america, and people, and etc etc etc..I can only say this..and know this comes after trying to truely extend a hand of friendship and understanding (after all, bush's second term gave the left a partial meltdown)...but to those folks I say:
Ha HA! you lost, and will forever lose..your philosophy: rejected! now, get out of MY America.

But to the fiscal reasonable conservatives...we can find common ground. our vision of progression does not disclude your desire for personal achievement and fiscal balancing...contrary, it requires it. There is no house without a strong foundation for it to sit on.

So ya..sort your party out..split it in two, or three if it has to. Many on the left are there strictly for social reasons as fiscally, neither party has shown true remarkable steps to achieve a balance of progress tempered with responsibility.

University of Mississippi Students Shouted Racial Insults After Obama Won Last Night

After Mitt Romney lost the 2012 election last night, hundreds of Ole Miss students, according to Gawker, gathered to exchange racial epithets and violent, anti-Obama chants. In addition to saying not so nice, anachronistic things about people who aren't the same skin color as them, the students reportedly threw rocks and burned an Obama sign.

So, serious question to you then:
Do these kids represent a bunch of morons, or conservatives as a whole?

Does the actions of one or some represent the entire group they are part of?

I think that they don't, however, considering you are using individual examples of bad form to paint a whole group, then you -must- accept the same judgement for what you stand for, correct?

Do you now regret painting all liberals with one brush now?

MENSA is going to be upset upon hearing this.

ATS is filled with all sorts of fruits and nuts. Some highly intelligent, some you wonder how they managed to turn their computer on, and everything in between.

ATS is a good representation not of a intellectual community discussing stuff, but rather of a cross thinking platform of unique perspectives...but not all perspectives are clever.

Ann Coulter says that there is no racism left in the right..not as a group (fair enough), but not even individually...aka, you can not find a single racist in the republican party on any level, from a senator, to some dipstick pig farmer in the backwoods of arkansas... ATS is among the brightest.... It also means that each person will approach the path to solutions for this country by a variety of means... to downgrade someone's point of view because it is different then yours makes you a disappointment not only to ATS, not only to this great country of ours, not only to your family, and worst of all you are disappointment to yourself..

you have totally ignore the OP's message and point. The idea is for a civil conversation, or at the very least fall back and watch implosion as they turn on each other...

Nothing wrong with the thread/opening post. Basically my friend TheOneElectric, is simply saying to liberals: Look, we tried to reason with them..but they (conservatives) need to sort themselves out now without our help..they need to punch each other and bite and split..and we aren't helping the matter trying to give them the olive branch.

Thats not trolling or flaming..thats stating a fact and good advice...we do need to back off, let them go at each other, etc. Its not like any of them will listen to the advice of someone they painted as either a demon, idiot, soros tool, etc...and the more we butt in, the more likely they will sweep aside their needed changes and remain the same they were.

I met someone and we seemed to be clicking fine until she went off on a rant about Obama. I tried to change the subject and she proceeded to say that I was "wrong" for not thinking that the U.S is becoming more socialist, blah blah blah.

You can't reason with people like that. They'll turn around and play the victim and claim that you're suppressing their opinions when in reality, they're insulting your intelligence without much of a care.

Girl I am seeing now is a conservative. I don't mind it. Then again, she is a british conservative, which by comparison makes Obama look like Rush Limbaugh.
After her basically comparing the two, she wanted Obama to win...because from a outsiders view, it was the race between a sort of centerist rock star, and some wackjob cultist pilgrim

There are some issues with liberals that could be addressed, the most important one being the fact that a strong family structure (including gay marriage) is something that helps the middle-class. In addition, they are very intolerant of individuals with different viewpoints.

Would also like to know who "they" is...in your last statement (above). - I''ve seen liberals "more tolerant" of other viewpoints in some arenas...but in others, far less tolerant.

As I said before, I agree with a lot of liberal views, especially their tendency to work with scientific evidence and their work towards a society where everyone can live in comfort.

I have noticed an almost sinister resistance to ideas/findings that would topple entrenched "scientific paradigms"...by the same group that touts honesty & ethics as founding principles for their endeavors.
This is the same as what so many (here) find abhorrent about "the Conservatives".

That said, if the conservative party was able to completely re-think their outdated viewpoints, and come up with a positive message about what they wanted to happen while still working with existing social programs and accepting reality, I think they could make a strong case and come out looking as the more progressive party.

Here is a fundamental difference between "conservative" and "liberal" (imo)...
The "liberal" mindset is geared toward "social programs"...meaning - programs paid for by all (those who want them, and those who disagree with them). The "liberal" mindset attaches some degree/s of righteousness (or - civility) to whether one is for or against such programs.
The "conservative" mindset is geared more toward keeping things the way they are (and have been)...

They might think this is not possible, but if they took the time to thoroughly understand liberal policy instead of being afraid of it, they might be able to make adjustments to it in some way that could benefit our nation.

You are more optimistic than I in these regards.
