14-year-olds Duro-Aina Adebola, Akindele Abiola, Faleke Oluwatoyin, and 15-year-old Bello Eniola have created a urine powered generator. Here’s how it works:

Urine is put into an electrolytic cell, which cracks the urea into nitrogen, water, and hydrogen.The hydrogen goes into a water filter for purification, which then gets pushed into the gas cylinder. The gas cylinder pushes hydrogen into a cylinder of liquid borax, which is used to remove the moisture from the hydrogen gas. This purified hydrogen gas is pushed into the generator
1 Liter of urine gives you 6 hours of electricity.

We have demonstrated that urea at the concentrations found in urine can be used for the production of H2 through this new technology utilizing inexpensive Ni.

for comparison, we found that 30% less energy is required for urea electrolysis, which generated 36% cheaper hydrogen compared to water electrolysis.

It's apparently a cheaper way to make hydrogen from urine instead of water, but it still requires more electrical energy input to the cell to make it go than you get back.

On the other hand, the energy in vs energy out is a lot better than trying to electrolyze water.

I can see it now, rest stops for long trips are a thing of the past! Oh, time to refuel kids! I'm sure with the surplus of soda people drink, it wouldn't be hard to keep energy demands low.


But none the less, this is pretty cool that some teenagers discovered this, there might still be some hope yet for the next generation.

That is cool news. I read the sources and some additional information....... considering just the factory farms full of pigs would power a town! lol Anyway.... as stated, Urea is the largest source of waste on th planet.... kinda hard to imagine but...whatever, I suppose it could be true...... there should be generators attached to every urinal! Interesting find.

Just remember, though, that if you want a LOT of hydrogen from your pee supply, you'd need a LOT of solar cells, because you'll be putting in about 1.8x the energy you'll get back from burning the hydrogen. Still, that's 30% better than what you get from doing it to water, so it's significantly more efficient. It is not, however, miraculous.

No it is still a net loss of energy. Why use 10kwh of solar energy to end up with 8kwh of urea energy. You take the 8kwh, I will stick with the 10kwh.

You use solar when it is available and you hydrogen to generate power when the sun goes down. How hard is it to think rationally.

No at night I have a 95% efficient storage battery to draw from. Sorry but you still lose.

URINE IS NOT A POWER SOURCE.
