popten.net/.../top-ten-most-evil-dictators-of-all-time-in-order-of-kill -.1. Mao Zedong (49-78 million deaths)

Breakdown: Policy reforms like the Great Leap Forward and the Cultural Revolution.

Mao Zedong was a Chinese revolutionary, political theorist, and communist leader who led the People’s Republic of China. Mao, while controversial, is still widely considered a savior of the nation. I did a semester abroad in China in 2001 after falling in love with its history, and was surprised in my conversations that many people thought Mao had done 70% – 80% good things. During his first five years from 1949 – 53 he is said to have systematically killed between 4 to 6 million people by sentencing them to die or by sending them to “reform through labor” camps. He organized mass repressions, established execution quotas, and defended his actions in these early years as necessary for securing power for “The People’s Republic of China”. His social programs the Great Leap Forward and the Cultural Revolution are two of the most ill-fated, poorly named, initiatives ever. The first was an effort to rapidly industrialize China. His focus was on making China a premier exporter of steel, and to this end he asked everybody to make it. The problem was it got many citizens to make smelting shops in their backyards. Not only was the steel of little value, but it was made from everything lying around the house including their own cooking supplies! Without the tools to make food, no money coming in from the steel, and no money to survive ~ a lot of people starved to death. The estimates on this program alone are 20 million deaths! Think about that number. Really think about it. Then ask yourself… why would you EVER let someone back into power after such an insanely bad decision.Well, they took the reigns away from him for a short time. In the interim Mao started the socialist education movement. He aimed the concept at young ones who would eventually wrest the power away from the older guard. By 1964 this movement was renamed the “four cleanups movement” whose goal was cleansing politics, economics, ideas, and organization of “reactionaries”. This led to the formation of the “Red Guards” who were organized to punish intellectuals and take out Mao’s political adversaries. The Cultural Revolution was now underway, and its overriding mission was to abolish: Old Customs, Old Culture, Old Habits, and Old Ideas. Something Mao fervently believed in was that destruction and chaos could bring re-birth. So he told his followers to destroy buildings, sacred objects, talk back to ones elders, punish them, turn them in, and kill those who did not agree. By 1968 things were starting to look pretty good for Mao all over again, and so he put into place the decade long “Down to the Countryside Movement” which forced young intellectuals to move out to the country to become farmers. Sadly, the people he pushed out there were the same Red Guards who had helped him get power. Estimates of the death toll are between 40,000 – 7 million depending on who you ask. Finally, there is the 100 flowers movement which just needs an abbreviated mention here. Mao asked people to come forth and tell him how he should govern China. Intellectuals and liberals bit at the chance to tell him what they really thought, and were encouraged by the Communist party to do so. Then in a sudden change of heart, or an incredibly crafty mission to out his haters, the government persecuted 500,000 of them who were considered to be “dangerous thinkers”. Mao is essentially like that girlfriend/boyfriend who keeps on taking a # on you, but is so damn charming you hardly notice. His policies and political purges from 1949 to 1976 caused the deaths of 49 to 78 million people.

CHECK THAT OUT ^^^

2. Jozef Stalin (23 million deaths)

Breakdown: The great purges and Ukraine’s famine.

Jozef Stalin was the first Secretary of the Communist Party from 1922 – 1953. After Lenin’s death in 1924, he became the leader of the Soviet Union. Stalin didn’t take long in launching a new economy that screwed up food production across the country so bad it caused massive famine. Between 1922-23 it reached such catastrophic proportions everything went to #. In Ukraine this dark period is known as Holodomor. Its widely believed that Soviet policies caused the famine there and was designed as an attack on Ukrainian nationalism. Estimates on the total number of casualties within Soviet Ukraine range from 2.6 million to 10 million! During the late 1930s Stalin launched another wonderfully titled initiative called the Great Purge (also known as the “Great Terror”). It was a paranoid campaign to kill off the people who opposed him, and his targets were often executed. In 1939 Stalin agreed to a non-aggression pact with the Nazis. Eventually Germany violated the pact, the Soviet Union joined the allies, and they racked up 23.9 million deaths (the largest death toll in the war).

Most know obviously about jozefs escapades of course..^^^

Interesting. I was thinking about how people accuse America of imperialism, but as much as I hate these actions overseas, at least we are not attempting to occupy these locations. We are handing control over to the nations themselves. But it could be argued, and it is true, that many corporations in the US are going to make trillions of dollars off of infrastructure building in these locations. There are now many places in Afghanistan, for instance, that have electricity that never had it before, as well as other conveniences...But that power is not being given for free, you can count on that.

It is because of the dudes like you that this world is becoming a none livable place.
:
..And who said you should be slaves?..I mean as long as you simply bow and obey we demand nothing more
...Feels good to sound British for a change.

OMG dude I love everyone but like anyone on the planet until we become a global community I would pick a great briton over anyone else because they are my people, I can relate to great britons because they are the people I know best. It is the same for anyone on earth, they will pick a country they come from and wave the flag etc.
I do not claim to be super intelligent because I know Iam not, so let the people who are run the world I'am happy just doing as much good for other people around me.
Not all of us can change the world but some of us can change someones lives for the better and I for one if I meet any maker will hold my head up high and say I did my best for people.(not that I believe in a maker )

Look I have had a beer or 4 but dude I can be proud of what my forefathers did because of where we are today, fact is without our empire many countries would be a lot worse off.

dont you mean historically aggressive, like over centuries or thousands of years?

because lets say a relatively new country arises, perhaps only a couple centuries old blows pretty much of the whole world up with depleted, enriched uranium and even a few atom/nuke bombs... would that new country not be the most aggressive.. not historically aggressive britania?

Its maps like these which make me proud to be British. However I am not surprised we won’t soon rule over even Scotland, given we soon became led by an ideologically soft, politically unwanted by the people, and ungrateful for our own history, political class.
I happened thanks to WW1 and WW2 -it was only two years after WW2 we lost India to the Indians (who then became ruled by far less competent governments for many decades). One can't blame a democracy, about changing it's mind over colonialism after seeing real war within 26 years. Today (purely thanks to the existence of nuclear weapons) what we once had will never be fully restored, and therefore neither should we seek to do so.

..........However I am not surprised we won’t soon rule over even Scotland,........

We don't 'rule over' Scotland - Scotland is an equal part of The United Kingdom - and little wonder many Scots will vote for independance when people think like that.

ETA

....it was only two years after WW2 we lost India to the Indians.....

We didn't 'lose' India - we gave it back to those whom it belonged to in the first place - and rightly so.

Don't forget the Queen is still the head of 39 countries that form part of the Commonwealth of Nations. She is also the largest land owner in the USA.

In relation to this does anyone know, after the battle for Independence from us Brits. It was said that the then first US President approached King George III after the war to say we have no money to build and develop an infrastructure, can we help. And apparently we did, but was that money owed ever fully repaid?

Whilst they are not physically sending americans there to live and take over , they do what they have been doing for the last 50 years and install a friendly hand picked puppet regime , and the US exert control by proxy
they put their military bases their to have a standing army to defend their assets . Look to any country the US has helped overthrow and install a new regime to find they were hand picked by the CIA for control.
So this is just as good as empire building , they just changed the playbook a little

Plus the trade roots we established or re-established put in place the social and economic value systems we have today. Essentially raising the quality of life across the globe. Medicine, Science and Economics all prospered under the British Empire for a time at least.

But Sweden has invaded Britain. And we took it.
en.wikipedia.org...
Viking raiders struck England in 793 and raided Lindisfarne, the monastery that held Saint Cuthbert’s relics. The raiders killed the monks and captured the valuables. This raid marks the beginning of the "Viking Age of Invasion"
...
The Viking presence dwindled until 1066, when the invading Norsemen lost their final battle with the English at Stamford Bridge. Nineteen days later the Normans, themselves descended from Norsemen, invaded England and defeated the weakened English army at the Battle of Hastings.
HA! Almost 300 years of Looting, plundering, pillaging and fun.
Ahhhhhhhhh, those were the days...
Have a nice day.

Separate kingdoms back then old son. Lindisfarne was part of the Kingdom of Northumbria which fell to the Vikings. Mercia and Anglia (East Anglia) also fell, Wessex nearly did. Unlike the other kingdoms though, Northumbria was not as "Christianised" as the rest of the country and many of the old gods were still worshipped (alongside christianity), so Viking rulers was no bad thing up here. Same ideals, etc, hence all the inter marriage. No England (and definitely no UK) when Alfred was King of Wessex.

Okay...

And now for Vikings in Ireland!
en.wikipedia.org...
First Viking age (795–902)
The first recorded Viking raid in Irish history occurred in 795 when Vikings looted the island of Lambay.
...waves of Viking raiders plundering monasteries and towns throughout Ireland...
The Viking raids on Ireland resumed in 821, and intensified during the following decades. The Vikings were beginning to establish fortified encampments, longports, along the Irish coast and overwintering in Ireland instead of retreating to Scandinavia or British bases. The first known longports were at Linn Dúachaill (Annagassan) and Duiblinn (on the River Liffey, at or near present Dublin).[19][note 6] They were also moving further inland to attack, often using rivers such as the Shannon, and then retreating to their coastal bases. The raiding parties also increased in size, becoming regular armies—in 837 the annals report a fleet of sixty longships on the Liffey, carrying 1.500 men.
Second Viking age (914–980)
Between 914 and 922, Waterford, Cork, Dublin, Wexford and Limerick were established... The Vikings founded many other coastal towns... A genetics paper in 2006 by Dr Brian McEvoy found that most men with Irish-Viking surnames carried typically Irish genes. This suggests that Viking settlements may have had a Scandinavian elite but with most of the inhabitants being indigenous Irish.

This is why we call British and Irish men - women.

Dublin was the base for an enormous slave market, chosen as the site due to it's location (perfect for the staging posts needed for sea travel in the Viking era). I have known this for ages but the thing i have never found out was who were the slaves? Irish? Brits? Europeans? All of the above?

My own surname is either old Danish or old Anglo-Saxon - fundamentally the same thing, just differing eras. Does that make me extra guilty on the aggressive front, what with my Viking AND British background?
If so, i don't apologise. All bow to your conquering master!
