The Call

The phone rings its '80s jangle-jang
A jarring sound for any man
Or woman too;
For any who
Wait so long for a call
When hope's just a shadow
Burned on a wall

I pick it up and it's “Hi” and “Hi”,
She's calling late and I know why
And you would too,
Like any who
Wait so long for a call
When hope's just a shadow
Burned on a wall

“I really don't know where to start,”
She starts her farewell from her heart
What else to do
When she knows who
Waits so long for a call
His hopes just a shadow
Burned on a wall?

“It's really so hard to end like this,
With just a call, no goodbye kiss.”
And I do, too,
Like any who
Wait so long for a call
My hopes now a shadow
Burned on a wall.

“I know, yes I know – of course I do.
It must be really hard for you.”
I know it's true
Like any who
Wait so long for a call
Our hopes now just shadows
Burned on a wall

“You see, I just can't see you any more.”
Her sobbing plain, the pain so raw
I feel it too
Like any who
Wait so long for a call
Our hopes wretched shadows
Burned on a wall

“I'll love you always, until I die...
Goodbye, my love, goodbye, goodbye...”
We say it. Two,
Like any who
Wait so long for a call
Our hopes lonely shadows
Burned on a wall

Very nicely written, and I remember those '80s jangle-jangs
