The new laws be en proposed where the publics internet records will be kept for approx two years including emails(about to be introduced in Australia) is presumably to give investigators access to a suspected terrorists emails and web activity.
But wouldn't it be easy for terro.r cell members to make codes?
Even deliberately misspell words ...if these guys are coordinated ...they would be intelligent enough to do this.
The rules of the code could change every day even.
How would code interpretation hold up in court?
Surely terrorists and criminals will just invent even new languages that cannot be interpreted for years.
Perhaps the easiest way for them to communicate will be
sending letters.
By courier.
Islamic based courier companies .
These new reguations make little sense.
The enactment of the laws just alerts the terrorists and criminals.
It makes them more of a threat surely.

All they need is to encrypt their emails with PGP and encrypt their hard drive with 256 bit encryption a very long unique password, like an obscure Koran quote or something.
Honestly, as smart as a lot of these guys are, Im really surprised they dont already do this.

Alot of them already use codes.

A face to face courier is the most secure, IMO...though it's time consuming.

Terrorists already use codes. Internet monitoring isn't for counter-terror, it's to counter civil unrest and silence protest. It's no mistake that this is being done now, all over the world, as our economies collapse and civil unrest is on the increase. The PTB know that they are inching closer and closer to revolution on their doorstep, and they will do everything to prevent it, including national monitoring of all citizens.

Think of it this way...

A protest needs support, so it needs a website, a Facebook page, email communication and so on. You can't code that, because it needs to be publicly accessible.

But a terrorist just needs to give each contact a copy of some obscure novel from the 20th century and the intel services will not be able to crack any code they use based on it.

54, 43, 21, 35, 63, 1, 46, 85, 24,

Page, line, word... unless the novel is known, no intel service can break that very basic code. And that novel can change every day, week, or month.

In the same way, anyone can use a VPN. Anyone can be anonymous. So the idea that is going to prevent crime and terrorism is a complete lie.

The ONLY people this will affect are law abiding citizens and those wishing to legally protest and organize opposition.

This infuriates me, because most people don't understand this at all. Most people are so idiotic when it comes to the internet they really don't know their ass from their elbow, and that's especially true when it comes to members of governments, old people who don't know the difference between ISP and IP. They swallow it and go along with it because they are too embarrassed to admit that they are ignorant to it all and barely know how to switch their damned computer on!

It astounds me that this is all being allowed to happen. We look back on the regimes of others, with their files on dissidents and political activists and treat it with disgust and fear, and yet we are allowing our government to do exactly the same on a FAR larger scale.

The Nazis had filing cabinets with information on political opponents and dissidents. The Soviets had rooms filled with files on hundred of thousands of people. These were written, they had to be searched for limited information and built up over time. What our governments are planning is NATIONAL, covering EVERY citizen, with data on everything from the things they buy to the people they talk to, their sexual interests to their political opinions, their religious beliefs to the size of their shoes.

And it can all be searched, cross-referenced and provide information within minutes to anyone who has access.

Imagine the UK government creates a massive database like this, containing everything about every citizen that they can gather from Facebook and Google, their emails to and from everyone they know, their shopping habits and religious beliefs... and then a far right party suddenly gains power, or there's a military coup (it might be considered unlikely, but it's not impossible).

That far right government then has access to all that information, addresses of all Jewish people, all gay people, all immigrants to the country, all political opponents... can you imagine how easy it would have been for Hitler to murder another ten million people with access to that kind of information?

We are walking into a nightmare, and people are allowing it to continue. Our leaders know exactly what they are doing, and they know for a fact that this is about monitoring and controlling innocent citizens. This is what Naomi Wolf has been warning about, it's another step towards fascism, and if the people do not do something to stop it we will wake up in an Orwellian nightmare.

Wow..what a literate and earnest post

It used to be a federal offence to interfere with mail.

Now it will be a right of government.

And people make it so much easier by putting all their business out there in social media.

What if you create your own language(offline in a lead/copper plated concrete bunker) with other extremists?

Write a book with that new language that only you know what the words are in a random secure location.

Other baddies also read only one page at a time.

The language is based on the "current page" of the book.

The language is changed every few days or so.

Then keep changing the language but keep the "words" the same.

Release another book every week with the same book but in a new language.

If it is compromised only you know the next page. It will only help the intruder for a few days or a week or so.

This is kinda weak sauce though. CIA,NSA and military intelligence can figure out ways to spy on your "base" to uncover the new page of the book. Like satellites with ground penetrating radar and drones with x-ray,infrared, cameras.
They even have acoustic tools they can use.
