An article from the famous Washington Post is blue ribbon material for the laugh of the month award !!

They actually attempt to justify the recent rise in unemployment as job growth

I bet people looking for work will not agree, and this story, like many recent media stories are costing Obama and Democrat candidates dearly ---- these nut stories cost votes and jobs - their jobs and their votes !!

Just before Election Day, the Washington Post is super excited about Friday's unemployment numbers showing "job growth" for October, despite unemployment increasing from 7.8% in September to 7.9%. The paper describes this change as the unemployment rate staying "flat."

Absurdly, the Post tried hard to spin the actual increase in unemployment as a good thing.

The unemployment rate in October did rise to 7.9 percent, up from 7.8 percent, but the reason behind the uptick suggested an improved job market: More Americans decided to look for work, though not all of them found jobs.

I bet most "new" job seekers are a combination of "assistance" running out along with dwindling savings accounts because of the time unemployed or under-employed (as in part time and low wage). I think people are looking for a 2nd or 3rd part time job !!

Well, if the unemployment figures remained "essentially unchanged" and the rate increased because more people are now putting themselves back in the job market, then new jobs didn't keep pace with the number of job seekers.

The Post also didn't mention why more people might have entered the job force. Why, for instance, didn't the paper report that seasonal employment is just getting in swing as retail outlets hire temporary workers for the Christmas season?

Obama's recovery has grown at the slowest rate in 70 years and nearly 5 million fewer Americans are working or looking for work than when Obama took office. This dropout rate accounts for almost all of the supposed reduction of unemployment since 2009, for those who have given up looking for work do not figure into the unemployment rates.

Ahh yes....the double speak of politics says something in at least a few directions at once, doesn't it? What's the fun otherwise?

Adding jobs and unemployment going up is a sign of economic recovery, and usualy go hand in hand. It is actuallly a good sign and it was predicted.

BTW, all those jobs added are in the private sector.

And before anyone says this because someone always does: it is adjusted for seasonal variability.

Unemployment is the number of people actually looking for jobs. so when there is job growth, and the unemployment goes up, it means that people know that there are jobs out there. People don't look if there aren't jobs.
In layman's terms, people are hearing about jobs opening, so they are putting themselves back out into the workforce.

You make a good point about the complexities of what goes into the U-3 Unemployment number....or the number commonly used by media and generally seen in public. It wasn't until recently they developed a new method of calculating all this at the BLS which shows the people you're talking about and accounts for those merely underemployed or dropping out of searching entirely.

I was surprised it was developed now, of all times...as it makes Obama look worse and this is his agency in every practical sense. I suppose it shows some areas of Gov't aren't all politics, all the time.

(As noted..that is not all unemployed..it includes those working but not find working enough to cover expenses and the like)

Job market, economy, etc., are far more coplicated then ATSers like to think of it.

Such as the debt, and the constant comparing it to a bank account. The President has a team of economists trying to figure it out, you think it is just a bank account? LOL

Economy, especially global economy, is so complicated, that not one person in the world understands it all.

And the jobs added and the unemployment numbers are not the only factors are not the only indicators either.

The rise in unemployement was expected because it dropped in September. So the people who saw that it dropped in September, see that more jobs are being created, so they went back into searchig for jobs.

Where those jobs are created is important.

Other things to look for is average hours worked per week.

Number of temp jobs.

How many manufacturing jobs are added. How the housing market is doing. etc etc.

Yea, thats real funny. Conservatives love to show their hate for those who struggle in an economy that went to hell from Bush with his UNPAID WARS that were put on America's credit card, along with the Bush tax cuts for the WEALTHY. A perfect combination of EPIC FAILURE that created the debt we are currently in and you find it hilarious to make fun of the common-folk's struggles due to it?

They left out key facts and expect people to just drool over the imaginary and fabricated success.

It is obvious you have been fooled, which was the intent of the WP story in the first place !!
