I was only fourteen
the man I loved was twenty
stay away from him they said
I was told that plenty

She is just a kid they said
leave that girl alone
he had to get away he said
and one day he was gone

He vanished from my life
he was running from the pain
four years in the service
and he was home again

He tried to forget me
and find love out in the world
but he couldn't seem to forget
that girl that lived next door

I was now eighteen
and he was twenty four
would things be different
or as they were before

He asked me out on date
my parents still weren't pleased
I was warned of dangers
from pregnancy to disease

We dated for two whole weeks
before we said our vows
nearly thirty years ago
and still together now

It hasn't always been easy
at times we thought it'd end
but whats kept us together
is we are the best of friends

Blessed with two children
and grandbabies too
we have walked a happy road
and plan to continue to

Thank you for sharing this. It struck home. My wife and I also had many nay-sayers before we got married. Not due to age though.
Her family thought she was too good for me, and my family agreed
