When your eyes gaze upon me, tell me, what do they see?
Is it an emptiness that dwells, or an unquenchable fire that beseech?
I watch you from the shadows, ever-present in your dreams;
Lo, you do not see me, but I am always there it seems.

You are confused by these prying eyes, that look upon your face;
Quiet melancholy stirs the desires of thine heart, as I stalk and quicken pace.
Passion unrequited, drowning sorrow now your closest friend...
Look ahead, look behind; It matters not - I will always be here... until your fateful end.
Your deepest longings, hopes and fears scattered in this endless sea;
A million eyes that have turned cold, in this vast ocean of humanity.

What began as truth, now twists and turns... a masquerading lie;
Your vision blurred, senses failing; as you turn to run - nowhere you can hide.

Have you not learned? There is no escape! Nothing evades my sight.
I know your deepest secrets... and in the darkest of, I laughingly delight.

In this labyrinth of confusion, Many paths are yours to take;
The height of self delusion has caused panic, in which choice you have to make.
How did it become this way? Day has turned to night!
What once thou perceived as darkness, has transfigured into light.

Right is left, left is right; with no steady ground between.
I once was friend; now deadly foe, I hath removed the crutch on which you lean.
Your heart burns for one, yet yearns another; in bellowing agony.
I am that one that clouds your vision; darkening the path you need to see.

I was your beginning, and in time, I shall be your end;
The more you fight against me, the more your precious heart shall rend.
Time is short; a choice is needed, whatever shall you do?
Which path is right? Which path is wrong? That answer is eluding you.

I feel your pain; I feel your strife; your mind a battlefield.
I created your torment child; as your heart you would never yield.
This prison of fear and indecision was all of your own design.
The searing pain shall never cease, until you lay down your arms and dutifully resign.

No matter what choice you make, I will see it all.
So what shall it be, my child? Will you rise or will you fall?
The price of love is, and always has been, high and steep.
When it comes to the matters of the heart, I will always play for keeps.

In this game, it's fight or flight - the choice of life or death.
I will always be your shadow, until your last and final breath.

Remember that in this presence of this relentless agony;
I was your closest friend - and resistance made me your fiercest enemy.

Rubicant,
Very nice! I enjoyed this a lot, the way you worded it and spoke reminds me of my favorite kind of reading, beseech, thou, it matters not- you're my ATS Shakespeare

I think I'm addicted to reading all entries from these writing contests, I enjoy them a lot.
Great Job, S&F!

I enjoyed this. It made me think of battling addiction. I don't know that it's what you intended, but poetry is a sort of Rorschach test anyway!

It could be. I wrote this poem in a way that it could be comprehended in different contexts, with a possible different feel from each reader - as it could represent many different things based on personal experience.

Love is strange. So is revenge. It brings out the extremes........

This poem is not one of revenge. I will say that. It's meaning goes a bit deeper than that. It can be reflective of many different viewpoints based on each individual, but holds only one true meaning to me. This poem is a riddle of sorts; there are many different ways one can love - the struggles between those choices as well.

Thanks for sharing that with us here Rubicant! I could very much get the sense of what a break up that must have been. As with most good works, I could get a totally different meaning out of it than someone else.
However what I felt, was not a clean break, and something that you felt in your heart could have been avoided. Yet it seemed they preferred the ladder of the two outcomes.
SnF from me as I could tell it comes from the heart, darkness and anger is still very much an expression of love.
