I know this may be a little off base with the spirit of this writing competition but I love my country and I am heart broken over what is happening and has been happening to it.
This is my first poem and I only ask that you be gentle with me as I know only ATSers can

And Justice for ALL

Morning after morning
We stood, with hands over hearts’
Not thinking of what we were saying
Only realizing parts

We grow older but the words, they never fade
Sometimes I think on them and how they have been betrayed
I have pride in the words spoken in my youth
But this pride, I wonder, has it become uncouth?

The world is changing day by day
Our rights are starting to pass away
And here I stand a lot like you
Finding our Government is not so tried and true

We watch as slowly things change around us
We say nothing, we do nothing
We do not make a fuss

What I love seems to be slipping away
It slips a little faster with each passing day
But the words are there in the back of my mind
There meaning, lost in youth, are now refined

I PLEDGE ALLEGIANCE to the flag of the United States of America
And to the REBUBLIC for which IT STANDS
ONE NATION under GOD
INDIVISIBLE
With LIBERTY and JUSTICE for ALL

Words like “God, “One Nation” and “Indivisible”
They have become impermissible
As for the Republic for which the flag stands?
In is becoming a nation of commands

“Justice for all” is a nice thought
But for those we elect justice is bought
They do wrong in the most despicable ways
For them at least it would seem crime pays

I love this country and what it represents
But my love, I’m afraid, is becoming a capital offense
We have been traveling, slowly, down the wrong road
If we stay this course we will surly implode

So think on the words you repeated day after day
For in them lies the proper way
If you want to help put this country back on track
Take the advice of this literary hack

Thank you for a reality and reprieval of loyalty to our flag. Its so shameful to watch the cheerleading sheeple each time a court opinion issues or more legislation is passed, essentially whittling away at freedom. I remember when I first learned of "flag burning" and how sensationalized the news. And the right to burn flags continues, and civilized living is exchanged for the barbaric. Progress is smothered under the auspicioiusly so-called "rights" allocated to one group, but repressing the rights of another, such as to burn the flag. The great protectives of America the Beautiful, have been so taken for granted by the masses, and repression of freedom has polluted the gifted protectives of "sea to shining sea." Awesome poem and great thoughts well worded as a reminder of the freedoms we so enjoy and how worthy to protect, so I'll continue to keep the respect, and grateful that I was taught and allowed in school each morning to "pledge allegiance to the flag...."!!!. Thank you jsfad for your post. You get it. I was afraid it wouldn't be understood. I love this country. It is so heartbreaking to see what is happening, to imagine the world my three boys will have to raise their children in.

Thanks 74,
I know it might not be exactly what the CTPWC was after, but it has been on my heart and mind a lot lately.

I think the idea is about love and loss, and the emotion it stirs. Love for something extends beyond people and objects, so for me your poem was right on the money for the comp, as it is about something you truly love that is dying. I hope to see more from you this month.

Huh and I thought I was gonna get to read a Metallica poem....

You sure this is your first poem?
It's freaken awesome!!!
I've read a lot of entries that are off topic, with no attempt to meet the guidelines...This abstract connection to it is perfectly executed imo.

This needs to be read, now more than ever. I was hoping for a different outcome today but it was not meant to be. I will continue to pray for OUR President and This Great Country we live it.
