TV emits distress signal

An Oregon man discovered earlier this month that his year-old Toshiba Corp. flat-screen TV was emitting an international distress signal picked up by a satellite, leading a search and rescue operation to his apartment in Corvallis, Oregon, 70 miles south of Portland.

The signal from Chris van Rossmann's TV was routed by satellite to the Air Force Rescue Center at Langley Air Base in Virginia.

What's interesting about this is that it was either a smart college kid that tweaked his tv settings, or just a malfunction on the tv's part that coincidentally sent a distress signal. Although it was the latter, the chances of something like that happening are astronomically small. This was also a 121.5 MHz frequency coming from a broken tv set. Search and Rescue were probably expecting to stumble onto something big. lol Well it's good to know they have a sharp response to such lost causes.
