Today I cleaned the attic.
In a dusty spot, far back in the corner
I (again) found a box of trinkets
covering our time together--
a record (our song), a photo (the lake).
Here come the tears. Hello, heartache.

I carried the box downstairs,
hugging it to me, as I used to do you.
Gently placing it (again) on the floor beside me,
I caress the other treasures therein--
seashells (ocean mist), ticket stub (car show),
THE RING (our vows), now a broken promise of long ago.

My mind drifts back in time
as I (again) lovingly remove these cherished items.
Just as you still fill the space within me,
one-by-one, they fill the space around me:
chiffon scarf (makin' love), dried flowers (long walks),
forever and always, trinkets (my heart) will occupy this box.

Hey Habit4ming! Great work, and am glad to see a new member who has never done this before here on ATS get into this contest! I very much like your writing style, and it portrays a deepness about yourself for all to see.
As I have said in others peoples work. I get my own sense and my own take from your poem, being I am seeing this through my eyes and sense of experience.
But from the sense I get.. I found one of the hardest parts when you lose someone close to you.. Is going through all their stuff.
I still have a box in my top shelf, that I still have not gone through. I may be able to do it in another year or so.. But I told myself that 2 years ago. But can not bring myself to open this box, and get rid of stuff that I may not need.(Or fear I may find something that brings up an old memory.) Such as an old record, or an old love letter we would write to each other.)
So that is how that poem resonated with me.. So I gave you a star and flag, out of my respect and a show of support to you. Plus I liked it very much, and shows me you do cherish what you write about deeply.

And its easy to take for granted so many things in life.. Cherish those, and cherish the memory of those.

Thank you so much zysin5 and Slayer for your kind words. For some reason, I'm feelin' a little bashful here. I am very impressed with all the thoughtful, soulful poems I've read this night!!

Don't be bashful.

pssst.

I still have a shoe box filled with mementos of a special someone. Even a hand made Heart Pillow with a special note from her sewn inside.

That was one of the most moving entries so far. It should go in the top three simple for the emotion it draws.

Not spoken, but hidden in the verse, are the words of someone who lost their true love. I love the parenthetical emphasis, it really took me into the explanation. So very well done.

Flagged.

I really loved this! It was short, bittersweet and struck a cord with me. I think it is so moving you held on to those items, and you can bring them out and all the memories flood back...i'd imagine it is comforting and heartbreaking all at once, or at least that is how I'd imagine it to feel if it were me.

S&F!
